Long ago, a big fight happened in Indochina.

For a long time, France ruled much of Indochina.

The First Indochina War was a long and difficult conflict. It took place in a region called French Indochina. This area included parts of what we now call Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
How the fighting worked was very complex. Much of the war involved guerrilla warfare. This is a way of fighting where smaller groups use surprise attacks. They often hide in forests or use the land to their advantage.
The history of this war began many years earlier. France had controlled much of the region since the late 1800s.
Many important people and places were involved in the struggle. The Viet Minh received help from the Soviet Union and China.

The end of the war led to new changes. In 1954, leaders met at the Geneva Conference to discuss peace.
The First Indochina War was a major conflict in Southeast Asia. It took place in French Indochina from December 19, 1946, to August 11, 1954. The war was fought between France and the Viet Minh. The Viet Minh was a communist-led group seeking national independence.
The conflict involved two very different styles of fighting. Much of the war was characterized by guerrilla warfare. This is a type of combat where smaller groups use surprise attacks. They often use the natural environment, like forests, to hide.
The war had several distinct political stages. First, France reorganized Indochina into a confederation of states. In 1949, they created the State of Vietnam. They installed the former Emperor Bảo Đại as the head of state.
The roots of the war go back many decades. France had been absorbing parts of Vietnam since 1858. Vietnamese nationalism grew as people resisted French rule. An early leader was Phan Bội Châu, who looked to Japan for inspiration.
World War II changed everything in 1945. After Japan surrendered, a power vacuum opened. Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) in September 1945. However, French forces wanted to restore their authority. They overthrew the DRV government in Saigon in late 1945. This tension led to the start of full-scale war in December 1946.
The war was incredibly costly in terms of human life. Estimates suggest that between 400,000 and 842,707 soldiers died. Additionally, between 125,000 and 400,000 civilians lost their lives.
The war ended through diplomatic negotiations. In July 1954, leaders met at the Geneva Conference.
