Some art looks like things from our world.

Some art looks like things from the real world. We call this figurative art. It can show people or animals. It can also show trees or the sea. This is different from abstract art. Abstract art does not look like real objects.
Artists use many tools to make these works. They use lines and shapes. They use color and light. They also use texture. These parts help create an illusion of space. This makes the art feel real.
Figurative art is very old. Scientists found a cave painting in Borneo. It shows an animal. It may be 52,000 years old! This is the oldest known figurative art. In the past, Greeks used mimesis. This means they used observation to make art. They wanted to copy what they saw. Many famous painters used these ideas. They made art with order and logic. They also made art that told stories.
Figurative art is art that looks like things from the real world. This includes paintings and sculptures. It is also called representational art. It uses real objects as a source. This is different from abstract art. Abstract art does not have clear links to real objects. Some people call abstract art non-objective art.

Figurative art, sometimes called figurativism, describes artwork derived from real-world sources. This includes many forms of painting and sculpture. Because it uses real objects as a base, it is also known as representational art. This term is often used to contrast with abstract art. While abstract art may lack clear links to the physical world, figurative art retains strong references to reality. Some people use the term "non-objective" or "non-representational" to describe art that has no derivation from figures or objects.
Artists use several formal elements to create figurative works. These elements are the aesthetic effects created by design. They include line, shape, color, and texture. Artists also use light and dark, mass, volume, and perspective. These tools are used in other types of art as well. However, in figurative art, they serve a specific purpose. They are deployed to create an illusion of form and space. They also help to create emphasis within a narrative, or a story, portrayed by the artist.
Figurative art covers many different subjects and categories. It is not the same thing as figure painting. Figure painting specifically refers to art that represents the human figure. While humans and animals are frequent subjects, figurative art is much broader. It includes landscape and seascape paintings. It also includes still life, which depicts inanimate objects. Other types include history painting, townscapes, architecture, and cave paintings.
The history of this art form shows a long evolution of technique. Early figurative art relied on an understanding of abstracted shapes. For example, Greek antiquity featured figure sculpture that was not naturalistic. Instead, these forms were idealized and geometric. The art historian Ernst Gombrich called this the "Egyptian method." This name refers to imagery based on memory and known patterns rather than direct sight. Eventually, artists moved toward observation. By 480 B.C., Classical sculpture balanced ideal geometry with realism. The Greeks called this reliance on visual observation "mimesis."
Many important milestones shaped the way figurative art developed over time. In 1510, the artist Giorgione painted "Sleeping Venus." This was the first known reclining nude in Western painting. It introduced the female nude as a major subject for future artists. Later, the French painter Nicolas Poussin used a classical style. His work emphasized clarity, logic, and order. Poussin favored line over color. His approach served as an alternative to the narrative Baroque style of the 17th century. He became a major inspiration for artists like Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and Paul Cézanne.
As centuries passed, the parameters of figurative art continued to broaden. The rise of Neoclassical art under Jacques-Louis David eventually led to new reactions. Artists like Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet responded with more realistic styles. These movements helped lead to the multi-faceted figurative art seen in the 20th century. This evolution shows how artists constantly balance different principles, such as idealization and observation. They seek to reconcile these opposing ideas through their work.
Recent discoveries have pushed our understanding of how old this art truly is. In November 2018, scientists found a very old painting. It was located in the Lubang Jeriji Saléh cave on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. The painting depicts an unknown animal. Researchers believe it is over 40,000 years old. Some estimates suggest it may be as old as 52,000 years. This makes it the oldest known piece of figurative art ever discovered.
Today, figurative art remains a vital way for humans to express their connection to the world. It connects to many broader fields, including history and science. By studying these works, we learn about how people perceived their environment in the past. Whether through a prehistoric cave painting or a modern sculpture, figurative art uses the real world to communicate meaning. It remains a fundamental way for artists to use shape, color, and light to tell human stories.
