It sits in a region called Emilia-Romagna. The city is located northeast of Bologna. It is also south of Venice. A branch of the Po River flows near the town. This water path is called the Po di Volano. The land around the city is part of the Padan plain. This area is very flat and sits near sea level. Because it is so close to the river, the city has faced many floods. One large flood happened in 1951. The weather here is warm and temperate. This means winters are mild and summers are hot. There is also plenty of rain in the spring and autumn.

Many interesting things happened in Ferrara long ago. The first settlements in this area date back to the 6th century BC. Some people believe the city began from two small Byzantine settlements. One group lived near the Cathedral of St. George. Another group lived in a castrum, which is a fortified place. This fort was built to defend against the Lombards. The city appears in a document from the year 753 AD. That was when the Lombard king Desiderius captured the town. Later, the Franks took the town and gave it to the Papacy. In the year 988, the Church gave the land to the House of Canossa. By 1115, Ferrara became a free commune.

For a long time, the House of Este ruled the city. This family helped Ferrara become a famous center for culture. They loved music, literature, and the visual arts. In 1484, a man named Biagio Rossetti made a plan for the city. This plan was called the "Erculean Addition." It helped the town grow in a very organized way. This special urban planning is why UNESCO named Ferrara a World Heritage Site. During this time, the city was a place where many artists worked. The Este family were great patrons, which means they supported the arts. They helped make the city shine on the world stage.

There are many famous buildings to see in the city today. The Este Castle sits right in the center of town. It was built in 1385 by Bartolino da Novara. It has four huge bastions and a moat to keep people safe.

Because of its location near the Po, the city has faced many disastrous floods. One notable flood occurred in 1951. The climate is classified as humid subtropical. This means the area experiences mild winters and hot summers. It also receives heavy rain during the spring and autumn.

The history of the area stretches back to the 6th century BC.

Early evidence includes the Etruscan town of Spina. In 1922, drainage work in the Valli di Comacchio marshes revealed a necropolis with over 4,000 tombs. Scholars suggest Ferrara may have grown from two Byzantine settlements. One was a cluster of facilities near the Cathedral of St. George. The other was a castrum, or fortified complex, on the river's left bank. This fort was built to defend against the Lombards. Ferrara appears in a document from 753 AD. This was when the Lombard king Desiderius captured the town. Later, the Franks gave Ferrara to the Papacy.

The House of Este became the most significant force in Ferrara's history. In 1264, Obizzo II d'Este became the lifelong ruler of the city. His rule ended the communal period and began the Este era. This dynasty lasted until 1598. The family provided many powerful leaders. For example, Borso d'Este became the duke of Ferrara in 1471. The Este family were also great patrons of the arts. They supported music, literature, and visual arts. This support turned Ferrara into an international cultural center. The family's influence helped shape the city's famous architecture and culture.

Renaissance urban planning transformed the city's physical layout. In 1484, Ercole I requested a masterplan from the architect Biagio Rossetti.

This plan created the "Erculean Addition." This expansion is a major example of Renaissance urban design. Because of this planning, UNESCO designated Ferrara a World Heritage Site. The city also became known for its advanced technology. Alfonso I maintained a foundry that produced excellent artillery. This helped him win the Battle of Ravenna in 1512. However, the city faced many challenges. An earthquake in 1570 caused the economy to collapse. Later, the House of Este lost control to the Papal States.

Ferrara contains many iconic architectural landmarks. The Este Castle was built in 1385 by Bartolino da Novara. It features four massive bastions and a moat for protection.

The Cathedral of Saint George was consecrated in 1135. It displays a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. The cathedral features a marble campanile, or bell tower, attributed to Leon Battista Alberti.

The 15th-century Town Hall once served as a residence for the Este family. Another important site is the Palazzo Schifanoia. This building contains frescoes that depict the zodiac and the months. These buildings show the city's long history of wealth and art.

Industrial changes have shaped the modern city. In the late 1800s, Ferrara was a trade center for crops like sugar beet and hemp. Large land reclamation projects were later used to expand farmland. They also helped to remove malaria from the wetlands near the Po delta. Mass industrialization began in the late 1930s. A chemical plant was established to produce synthetic rubber. During the Second World War, Allied planes bombed the city. They targeted industrial facilities and railway links. After the war, the industrial area in Pontelagoscuro grew very large. At its peak, it produced 20% of the plastics in Italy. This area employed 7,000 workers.

Today, Ferrara is transitioning into a new economic era. The city now relies more on the tertiary sector and tourism. This means it focuses on services and visitors rather than heavy industry. While some heavy industry remains, much of it has been phased out. The city is also a major university center. It is considered the second most important university city after Bologna. Even after a recent earthquake in 2012, the historic center remained largely intact. The city continues to balance its ancient heritage with modern life. It remains a vital part of the Emilia-Romagna region.
