Scientists have studied these remains for a long time. In 1829, William Buckland first described coprolites. These are fossilized feces. Before he named them, people called them "fossil fir cones." Coprolites are very important for paleontologists. They provide direct evidence of what extinct animals ate. They can range from a few millimeters to over 60 centimeters in size.
