A designer must think about many details for each look. They choose the shape, color, and fabric for every piece. They also pick the patterns and the trimming. Designers want their clothes to be both useful and pretty. They think about who will wear the clothes and where. Some people want special clothes for parties or evening events.

Creating a garment involves a special way of working. Some designers start with an idea in their head. They might draw that idea on paper or a computer. Others go straight to draping fabric onto a mannequin. A mannequin is a form used to shape the cloth. The work begins with patternmaking to create a base shape. Designers use tricks like dart manipulation to change how it fits. They can also use contouring to fit the fabric closer to the body. Once they are happy with a test version called a toile, they make the final pattern.

Modern fashion design has an interesting history. Before the 19th century, most clothes were made by anonymous seamstresses. High fashion used to come from what people wore at royal courts.

Charles Frederick Worth changed everything in Paris. He was the first designer to sew his own label into clothes. He even started a fashion house called a maison couture. Because of him, designers could tell customers what to wear. This was a big change from the old way of dressmaking.

A designer must balance beauty with function. They consider who will wear a garment and in what situation. This requires careful choices regarding shape, color, fabric, and trimming. Designers must also anticipate changes in consumer desires. This is necessary because it takes time to bring a garment to market.

The process of designing a garment involves many technical steps. Some designers begin with a mental vision. They may translate this vision into drawings on paper or a computer. Others prefer draping fabric directly onto a mannequin, which is a dress form. A critical stage is patternmaking, which begins with creating a sloper. A sloper is a base pattern that fits a specific model or follows standard size charting. Designers use dart manipulation to move darts without changing the overall fit. They also use contouring to help fabric fit closer to the bust or shoulders. Finally, they add fullness to increase the length or width of a pattern.

Once a designer is satisfied with a test version called a toile, or muslin, they move forward. A professional pattern maker then creates the final working version using paper or computer programs. A sample garment is eventually made and tested on a model. This ensures the outfit is fully operational. Designers use various elements to create visual interest. These include color, texture, space, lines, pattern, silhouette, shape, proportion, balance, emphasis, rhythm, and harmony.

Modern fashion design has a distinct history rooted in the 19th century. Before this era, clothing was largely created by anonymous seamstresses. High fashion was often dictated by what was worn at royal courts. Charles Frederick Worth changed this dynamic in Paris. He was the first designer to sew a label into his garments. He established a maison couture, or fashion house.

Worth was so successful that he dictated styles to his customers. He was the first person to be called a couturier. After 1858, design houses began hiring artists to sketch garments. This allowed clients to approve designs before manufacturing began.

Today, the industry is divided into several distinct categories of production. Haute couture involves making-to-order garments for specific individuals. These use expensive fabrics and time-consuming, hand-executed techniques. While couture brings prestige, it often makes little direct profit for fashion houses.

Ready-to-wear, or prêt-à-porter, sits between couture and the mass market. These are made in small quantities to ensure exclusivity. They are often showcased during fashion weeks, which occur twice a year. These seasons include spring/summer, fall/winter, resort, swim, and bridal.

The mass market is the largest sector of the industry. It caters to many customers by producing ready-to-wear garments based on current trends. To keep costs low, manufacturers use cheaper fabrics and machine production. This results in much cheaper end products. There is also a category known as "half-way garments." These are intentionally unfinished pieces. They encourage co-design between the primary designer and the consumer. This process can create a sentimental attachment to the final product.

Fashion is a massive global industry with significant economic impact. In the United States, the median annual wage for salaried designers was $79,290 in May 2023. The highest 10 percent earned $160,850. In 2016, there were 23,800 fashion designers in the U.S. New York is the largest employment state, with 7,930 designers.

Technology is rapidly changing how designers work. Dutch designer Iris van Herpen used 3D printing in her Crystallization collection. Software now aids in product development through artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Designers use 3D modeling to create prototypes and work with suppliers. Product managers also use lifecycle management software. This helps them track tasks from the initial concept to the completed product.
