Faisal's journey to becoming a king had many steps.
After leaving Syria, Faisal became the King of Iraq.
Faisal's work helped Iraq become a recognized country. In 1932, Iraq finally gained independence from British rule. The country then joined the League of Nations. This was a group where nations worked together to keep peace. Faisal died of a heart attack in Switzerland in 1933. He was only 48 years old when he passed away. His eldest son, Ghazi, took over as the next king.
Faisal I was a prominent Hejazi statesman who shaped the modern Middle East.
Faisal's political career accelerated during the First World War. In 1916, he began leading the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire.
Following the war, Faisal sought to secure a place for Arab interests in the new world order. In 1919, he led the Arab delegation to the Paris Peace Conference.
Faisal's first attempt at kingship occurred in the Arab Kingdom of Syria. In March 1920, the Syrian National Congress proclaimed him king.
In 1921, the British government decided to establish a monarchy in Iraq. They wanted a leader who was popular but also willing to work with British administration. At the Cairo Conference in March 1921, the British selected Faisal for this role.
As king, Faisal worked to build a sense of national identity in a new country. Iraq had been formed from three Ottoman provinces: Mosul, Baghdad, and Basra. Because these areas were distinct, there was no existing sense of Iraqi nationalism. Faisal promoted pan-Arabism to connect Iraq with Syria and the Fertile Crescent. He also worked to foster unity between Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims. He wanted to encourage a common loyalty to the new state. His goal was to create a stable nation out of diverse groups.
Faisal's reign reached a major milestone in 1932. This was the year the British Mandate ended and Iraq gained independence. Upon gaining independence, Iraq joined the League of Nations. This international organization was designed to promote global cooperation. Faisal's leadership helped transition the country into a recognized sovereign state. He died of a heart attack in Bern, Switzerland, in 1933 at age 48. His eldest son, Ghazi, succeeded him as king, continuing the Hashemite rule in Iraq.
