This connection is called a PCI Express lane. It allows data to move very quickly between the card and the computer. The cards can also use USB connections to talk to the system. This means they have much more bandwidth than the older PC Cards. Bandwidth is the amount of information that can travel at one time. The ExpressCard can even be hot-pluggable, which means you can plug it in while the computer is running.

Before ExpressCard, laptops used older PC Cards or slow ports to connect things. The ExpressCard standard was first made by a group called the PCMCIA. Later, a group called the USB Implementers Forum took over to look after the rules for it. In 2009, a newer version called ExpressCard 2.0 was introduced at the same CeBIT show. This newer version added even faster USB 3.0 speeds to the cards.

There are two main shapes for these cards to fit into slots. The first is the ExpressCard/34, which is 34 mm wide.

The second is the ExpressCard/54, which is wider and has an L-shape. Most cards are 75 mm long, so they stick out 5 mm from the laptop. Some special cards might be thicker to hold antennas or sockets. Many famous brands used these slots in their laptops. For example, Apple used them in MacBook Pros from January 2006 until June 2009. Dell, Lenovo, and HP also made many laptops with these slots.

Even though ExpressCards were very helpful, technology keeps changing. Today, most laptops have built-in tools or use USB ports instead. Many companies now use something called Thunderbolt to connect big devices. Thunderbolt is much faster than ExpressCard because it can move more data at once. While you might not see an ExpressCard slot on a brand-new laptop, it helped bridge the gap between old and new tools. It allowed laptops to grow and change as we needed them to.

The mechanism of the ExpressCard relies on high-speed data pathways. It provides a direct connection to the computer's system bus through a PCI Express x1 lane. It also supports USB 2.0 connectivity.

This architecture offers much higher bandwidth than its predecessor, the CardBus. While CardBus devices usually shared a total bandwidth of 1.06 Gbit/s, an ExpressCard can reach a maximum throughput of 2.5 Gbit/s through PCI Express. It can also reach 480 Mbit/s through its dedicated USB 2.0 connection. Furthermore, the cards are hot-pluggable, meaning they can be inserted or removed while the computer is still running.

There are two distinct physical shapes, or form factors, for ExpressCards. The first is the ExpressCard/34, which is 34 mm wide.

The second is the ExpressCard/54, which is also 34 mm wide at the connector but has an L-shape to be wider in other areas. Most standard cards have a length of 75 mm. This length causes the card to protrude 5 mm above the surface of the laptop. However, some variants are only 70 mm long so they stay level with the surface. While the cards are generally thin, they may be thicker in certain sections to accommodate antennas or sockets.

The history of the ExpressCard began with the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA). They showed the first ExpressCard products at the CeBIT trade show in Germany in March 2005.

Following the dissolution of the PCMCIA in 2009, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) took over the responsibility for the standard. The USB-IF also manages the ExpressCard Compliance Program. This program allows companies to earn a license to use the official ExpressCard logo on their products. In March 2009, a new version called ExpressCard 2.0 was introduced at the CeBIT show in Hannover. This version added support for USB 3.0 SuperSpeed, which offers a raw transfer speed of 5 Gbit/s.

Many major computer manufacturers integrated ExpressCard slots into their high-end laptops during the mid-2000s. Hewlett-Packard began shipping systems with the interface in November 2004. Lenovo added the slot to its flagship ThinkPad T43 in May 2005.

Apple Inc. included ExpressCard/34 slots in every MacBook Pro from January 2006 until June 2009. Dell also used the technology in several product lines, including Precision, Inspiron, and Latitude. Other companies like Sony, ASUS, Acer, and Panasonic also utilized the standard. For example, Panasonic used ExpressCard/54 slots in its rugged Toughbook brand of laptops.

ExpressCards were used for a surprising variety of specialized hardware. Some cards provided wireless network interface controllers (NIC) or TV tuner cards. Others acted as solid-state drives or Serial ATA storage devices. Sony even used the ExpressCard/34 form factor for flash memory modules in its XDCAM EX/SxS camcorders. This made it easier to copy video data between the cameras and laptops. In 2006, Belkin released the first ExpressCard docking station. This device used the PCIe part of the connection to enable 1600x1200 video resolution. It also used the USB part to provide audio and network ports.

While ExpressCard was a major step forward, it has since been replaced by newer technologies. Most modern laptops now use built-in components or standard USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports for peripherals. For high-performance needs, such as external desktop graphics card enclosures, Thunderbolt has become the preferred choice. Thunderbolt is significantly faster than ExpressCard. While ExpressCard could reach a maximum of 5 Gbit/s using one PCIe lane, the first two revisions of Thunderbolt offered 20 Gbit/s of bandwidth. Thunderbolt achieves this by using four PCIe 2.0 lanes. As a result, the ExpressCard has largely moved from being a common laptop feature to a specialized tool for specific business needs.
