Expansionism is when a state tries to get more land.

Some leaders use armies to build empires. This is called imperialism. Other times, a country wants more land for its people. They might want more food or gold. Some leaders want to spread their own ideas to new places. In the past, some people thought they could take land just because they were strong.

Many different groups have done this. The Mongol Empire grew very large. The Ottoman Empire also grew by taking new lands. In the 1800s, many European powers took over parts of Africa.

Expansionism is when a country tries to gain more land. Some states do this by building empires through military force. This is often called imperialism or colonialism. Other times, a country might want more territory for specific reasons. They may need more resources or space for their people to live. Some leaders also want to spread their own ideas to new places. In the past, some people believed in the idea that might makes right. This meant they thought they could take land simply because they were strong enough to do it.

There are many different reasons why states choose to expand. Some countries want to reclaim land they believe belonged to them long ago. This is sometimes called pan-nationalism or reunification. Other leaders might use expansion to show their power to rivals. A study from 2023 found that expansion often starts by accident. Sometimes, people working on the edges of a country act without permission. Once land is taken, leaders find it very hard to give it back. They may feel pressure from politics or a sense of national honor.

History shows many famous examples of large empires growing over time. The Mongol Empire grew very large between the years 1206 and 1294. The Ottoman Empire also grew during the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1453, Mehmed the Conqueror took Constantinople to end the Eastern Roman Empire. Russia also grew significantly between 1547 and 1725. During the 1800s, many European powers took over large parts of Africa.

Different movements have used expansionism to change the world. In the United States, people believed in a concept called Manifest Destiny. This idea suggested the country should expand toward the West. This movement led to the Mexican War from 1846 to 1848. This growth brought many changes and also brought new diseases to native groups. In the 20th century, leaders like Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler used expansion to build power. They used ideas like "living space" to justify taking over other lands. These actions led to many major wars across Europe.

Expansionism continues to be a part of our world today. Some countries make claims over parts of the sea or nearby lands. For example, China has claims in the South China Sea. Russia has also taken parts of neighboring countries like Georgia and Ukraine. In the United States, Donald Trump has discussed expanding political influence. He has mentioned ideas regarding Greenland and the Panama Canal. These modern events show that the desire for territory is still a major part of global politics.

Expansionism is the process where a state acquires more territory. This can happen through military empire-building, which is often called imperialism or colonialism. It can also refer to a state's desire to annex more land. Nations might seek new territory to find resources or to gain more living space, a concept known as Lebensraum. Other times, expansion is used to intimidate rivals or to spread a specific ideology. In the classical age, some leaders used the philosophy of "might makes right" to justify taking land. This meant they believed they could take territory simply because they were strong enough to do so.

There are several complex ways that expansionism is justified. Some states use pan-nationalism or reunification to claim ancestral lands. They may argue they are reconquering territory that was lost in the past. Other states promote ideologies of "promised lands" to justify their growth. A 2023 study suggests that expansion often begins by accident. This happens when actors on the periphery of a state act without permission from central leaders. Once land is captured, leaders often find it difficult to withdraw. They face pressure from domestic politics, national honor, and "sunk costs" from the effort already spent.

History provides many examples of how empires have grown. The Mongol Empire expanded significantly between 1206 and 1294. The Ottoman Empire also grew during the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1453, Mehmed the Conqueror conquered Constantinople, which ended the Eastern Roman Empire. Russia saw massive growth between 1547 and 1725. In the 19th century, the Russian Czar Nicholas I led wars against Persia and Turkey. He also used Russification policies to weaken minority ethnic groups. These historical shifts show how territory changes through both war and policy.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, expansionism became linked to nationalism. Expansionist nationalism is an aggressive form of patriotism. It combines national pride with the belief that a country must expand. This was seen during the Scramble for Africa in the late 1800s. In the United States, the movement known as Manifest Destiny drove expansion toward the West. This led to the Mexican War from 1846 to 1848. This movement also brought American settlers to new areas. These settlers brought diseases like smallpox and cholera, which killed many members of the Cheyenne and Comanche tribes.

During the 20th century, fascist leaders used expansion to build power. Benito Mussolini sought a "New Roman Empire" around the Mediterranean. He used the concept of Spazio vitale, or living space. This was similar to the Nazi concept of Lebensraum. After 1937, Nazi Germany under Hitler claimed the Sudetenland and annexed Austria in 1938. In 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union to achieve Lebensraum. These actions were driven by radical ideologies that sought to reshape borders through force. Such movements often led to large-scale international conflict.

Expansionist claims continue to shape modern global politics. In the 21st century, China has made claims in the South China Sea. These claims overlap with parts of Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Russia has also been described as expansionist since the 2010s. Under Vladimir Putin, Russia occupied parts of Georgia in 2008. It also annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and launched a full invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Similarly, Azerbaijan has advanced territorial claims regarding regions in Iran and Armenia. These modern disputes show that the struggle for territory remains a central issue.

Even in the United States, discussions of expansion occur. In late 2024 and early 2025, Donald Trump proposed increasing American influence. He expressed interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark. He also demanded that Panama return control of the Panama Canal to the U.S. These proposals involve ideas of national security and economic control. While the U.S. has not acquired new territory since 1947, these discussions reflect ongoing political debates. Expansionism remains a complex force that connects history, ideology, and the modern map.
