The word comes from a Greek term meaning "to lead out." This means the goal is to draw the meaning out of the writing. Most people use this term when talking about the Bible. However, modern scholars use it for many kinds of writing. They might study philosophy, literature, or even ancient laws. An exegete is a person who practices this kind of study.

They look closely at how words and sentences work. They also study the history and culture of the person who wrote the text. This helps them understand the original audience too.

Exegesis works by looking at many different layers of a text. Some scholars use textual criticism to find the origins of a writing. Others look at the specific type of literature being used. They might study the grammar or the way sentences are built. In religious studies, there are different ways to approach this work. Some people use a historical-critical method to see the world behind the text. This focuses on the original meaning in its own time. Others believe in revealed exegesis. This view holds that a divine spirit inspired the authors. This can lead to a "fuller meaning" than the human writer even knew.

This way of studying texts is very old. Some of the earliest examples come from Mesopotamia in modern-day Iraq. During the first millennium BCE, people wrote commentaries on clay tablets. These tablets used a script called cuneiform. Most of these writings were in the Akkadian language. They commented on many things like medicine and law. They also studied the stars to predict the future. These ancient studies help us understand how people in the past thought. They even show us how to pronounce names like Gilgamesh. Some scholars think these old methods influenced later Jewish studies.

Different faiths have their own special names and ways for this work. In Islam, the word for exegesis is tafsī r. It is used to explain the Qur'an using reliable sources. This might include using other verses or stories from the Prophet. In Judaism, exegesis is found in Rabbinic literature. This includes the Mishnah and the Talmuds. One form is called Midrash, which includes teachings on law and stories. In Indian philosophy, the Mimamsa school is very focused on this work. They even studied the philosophy of language. This shows that people have always wanted to understand deep meanings.

Today, exegesis is still a very important job for many people. Scholars often work together to write large books called commentaries. A Bible commentary might take many volumes to explain just a few books. Some groups, like the Catholic Church, have special schools for this. The École Biblique was founded in 1890 in Jerusalem. In the United States, schools like Harvard and Yale are famous for this study. Whether studying ancient clay or modern books, the goal is the same. It is about trying to see the world through the eyes of the writer. This helps us learn from the ideas of the past.
