He served as the 65th president of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019. Morales is widely recognized as the first president from the country's indigenous population. He belonged to the Aymara people, an indigenous group in the Andes. His administration focused on implementing left-wing policies to support the indigenous majority. He worked to improve socioeconomic conditions for groups that had been marginalized.

He also sought to reduce the political influence of the United States in Bolivia.

Morales was born on October 26, 1959, in the village of Isallawi. He grew up in a traditional adobe house in a family of subsistence farmers. His family raised crops and animals like llamas and sheep. As a child, he traveled on foot for weeks to exchange goods. He later moved to the El Chapare region in the Tropics of Cochabamba. There, his family grew various crops, including coca. Coca is a plant used in Andean culture for medicine and ritual.

His political career began through his work in trade unions. Morales campaigned against U.S.-Bolivian efforts to eradicate coca crops. He argued that these efforts violated indigenous Andean culture. This activism led to his involvement in anti-government protests. He was a leader in the Movement for Socialism, known as MAS.

He entered electoral politics in 1995 and was elected to Congress in 1997. Morales advocated for land reform and a fairer redistribution of wealth from gas extraction. He gained national attention during the Cochabamba Water War and the Gas War.

After being elected president in 2005, Morales introduced several major economic changes. He moved Bolivia toward a mixed economy to reduce dependence on neoliberalism. His government increased taxation on the hydrocarbon industry, which includes natural gas. This extra money helped fund social spending to combat poverty and illiteracy.

He also worked to reduce racial and gender discrimination. Under his leadership, Bolivia experienced strong economic growth. He also sought to reduce the country's reliance on the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Morales changed how Bolivia functioned as a nation through new laws. He instituted a new constitution that established Bolivia as a plurinational state. This recognized the many different indigenous nations within the country.

He also built strong relationships with other leftist governments in South America. This group of leaders is often called the "pink tide." He signed Bolivia into the Bolivian-Venezuelan Alliance for the Peoples (ALBA). He also oversaw Bolivia's admission into the Bank of the South and CELAC. These moves helped shift the country's international alliances.

His later years in office were marked by political tension and controversy. Morales' popularity declined when he attempted to abolish presidential term limits. In 2019, he won an election that was heavily disputed. There were many allegations of electoral fraud and widespread unrest. Because of this, Morales agreed to resign and left Bolivia.

He was granted political asylum in Mexico and later in Argentina. He eventually returned to Bolivia in November 2020 after his party, MAS, regained power.

Since his return, Morales has faced new political struggles. He has had disagreements with Luis Arce, the former economic minister who became president. These tensions involve power struggles within the MAS party. Morales is currently banned from running for the presidency in future elections. He also faces an arrest warrant related to a statutory rape investigation. Supporters still credit him with reducing poverty and improving infrastructure. However, critics argue his policies led to democratic backsliding. They also claim his defense of coca contributed to illegal cocaine production.
