They were a major part of life in the sea for a long time.

Scientists have found fossils of these animals on every continent. Most fossils come from North America and Europe. This is because they lived near an ancient supercontinent called Laurasia. The earliest known eurypterids lived 480 million years ago. They became very common during the Silurian period. One group, called Eurypterus, makes up over 90% of all known fossils. They eventually went extinct about 251.9 million years ago.

Eurypterids came in many different sizes. The smallest was Alkenopterus, which was only 1 centimeter long. The largest was Jaekelopterus, the biggest arthropod to ever live. It could reach 2.5 meters in length. Some other giants, like Pterygotus, were also very large. These big animals were often very lightweight. This helped them move more easily. Being lightweight was a common trait for giant arthropods.

Some eurypterids could even leave the water for a short time. Scientists found fossil tracks in Scotland that show how they moved on land. These tracks were made by a group called Stylonurina. They had long, strong legs for walking. This is similar to how modern crabs move. Most other eurypterids used their paddles to swim like oars. The anatomy of a eurypterid was complex and highly specialized. Like all arthropods, their bodies were segmented and covered in a cuticle made of proteins and chitin. The body was divided into two main sections called tagmata. The first is the prosoma, or the head section. This frontal part was covered by a protective carapace, which held the compound eyes and simple eyes called ocelli. Attached to the prosoma were six pairs of appendages. The first pair, known as chelicerae, functioned like the fangs of a spider. These were used to manipulate food and push it into the mouth. In the Pterygotidae lineage, these chelicerae grew into large claws with strong teeth.

Behind the head was the opisthosoma, or the abdomen. This section consisted of 12 segments. It could be divided into a mesosoma and a metasoma, or a preabdomen and a postabdomen. The very end of the body was the telson. In many species, the telson was shaped like a blade. In some groups, such as the Pterygotioidea, the telson was flattened to act as a rudder for swimming. Some species, like Eusarcana, had telsons that looked like those of modern scorpions. These may have been used to inject venom.

Eurypterids used different appendages for different tasks. The second through sixth pairs of appendages were generally walking legs. These legs had segments called coxae, which often featured tooth-like plates called gnathobases for feeding. In the suborder Eurypterina, the sixth pair of legs was modified into wide swimming paddles. These allowed the animals to move through aquatic environments. Other groups, the Stylonurina, had long, slender legs instead of paddles. These legs were better suited for walking on the sea floor.

Size varied greatly among the different species of eurypterids. The smallest known species, Alkenopterus, was only 1 centimeter long. However, the group included the largest arthropods to ever live. The genus Jaekelopterus is the most famous example. Some estimates suggest Jaekelopterus could reach 2.5 meters in length. If you include its long chelicerae, its total reach might have been even greater. Other giants included Pterygotus and Acutiramus. These large animals often had a lightweight build. This lightweight construction helped them manage the energy costs of moving and breathing.

Evidence suggests that eurypterids were more than just ocean dwellers. Some studies indicate they possessed a dual respiratory system. They had gill tracts, or branchial chambers, located on the underside of the opisthosoma. They also had oval or triangular organs that may have helped them breathe air. This could have allowed them to spend short periods in terrestrial environments. In Scotland, scientists found a fossil trackway attributed to the genus Hibbertopterus. This trackway is the largest terrestrial trackway ever made by an arthropod. It shows that some eurypterids could walk on land using a slow, jerky gait.

Throughout history, eurypterids were found across many different environments. While most were marine, many later forms lived in fresh or brackish water. Fossils have been recovered from every continent on Earth. Most specimens are found in North America and Europe. This is because many species lived near the ancient supercontinent of Laurasia. A few genera, such as Adelophthalmus and Pterygotus, were cosmopolitan, meaning they lived all over the world. The group faced major challenges during the Late Devonian extinction event. They eventually became extinct during the Permian–Triassic extinction event, about 251.9 million years ago.
