History often overlooked Foote's contributions for nearly a century. Her 1856 paper was the first known publication in a scientific journal by an American woman in the field of physics. In 1857, she published a second paper regarding static electricity in atmospheric gases. While she was not a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), her papers were read at their annual conferences. For a long time, the scientific community credited John Tyndall with discovering the mechanism of the greenhouse effect. However, modern researchers have confirmed that Foote's work predated Tyndall's 1859 paper by three years and his 1861 publication by five years.
Beyond the laboratory, Foote was a dedicated campaigner for social justice.
