On the islands, the Bubi people are the second largest group. They are native to the island of Bioko. The islands sit near the nation of São Tomé and Príncipe.

History shows many different groups have lived here over a long time. Pygmies were the first known people to settle in this area. Later, Bantu-speaking groups arrived around the 6th century BC.

Since the mid-1990s, the country has become a large producer of oil. This oil brings much wealth to the nation. However, this wealth is not shared equally among all the people.

Many things connect Equatorial Guinea to the rest of the world. It is a member of the United Nations and the African Union. Because it was a Spanish colony, many people speak Spanish. They also use French and Portuguese as official languages. The country faces some hard challenges with its resources. For example, less than half of the people have access to clean drinking water.

Human history in this region spans thousands of years. Pygmies were the first confirmed inhabitants of the area. Later, Bantu-speaking groups migrated to the region around the 6th century BC.

European contact began in 1472 when the Portuguese explorer Fernando Pó arrived. He originally named Bioko island "Formosa," meaning beautiful. Portugal colonized Fernando Pó and Annobón in 1474. They established factories around 1500 to use the volcanic soil. In 1778, the Treaty of El Pardo transferred territory to Spain.

This treaty gave Spain Bioko and rights in the Bight of Biafra. Spain then administered the territory as Spanish Guinea.

The 19th century brought complex changes to the islands. Spain leased a base in Bioko to the United Kingdom from 1827 to 1843. The British used this base to help suppress the slave trade. During this time, a black Creole elite known as Fernandinos emerged. They managed many of the plantations on the island. Many people from West Africa, the West Indies, and even the Philippines settled there. By 1870, settlers moved to the highlands to avoid disease. This move helped improve survival rates for Europeans. However, many observers still found the conditions difficult.

Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in 1968. The country's early independence was marked by the rule of Francisco Macías Nguema. He was a dictator who declared himself president for life in 1972. In 1979, his nephew, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, took power in a coup.

Obiang has served as president since that time. Foreign observers often characterize his regime as a dictatorship. The government is described as authoritarian and sultanist.

Because of this, the country has a poor human rights record. It frequently ranks among the most repressive societies in international surveys.

Economically, the country changed significantly in the mid-1990s. Equatorial Guinea became one of the largest oil producers in sub-Saharan Africa.

This resource made the nation one of the richest in Africa per capita. However, this wealth is not shared equally among the people. Many citizens do not benefit from the oil riches. The 2023 Human Development Index ranks the country 133rd. Less than half of the population has access to clean drinking water. Additionally, 7.9% of children die before the age of five. Human trafficking also remains a significant problem in the country.

The population of Equatorial Guinea is approximately 1,853,559 people.

The Fang people are the dominant ethnic group, making up over 85% of the population. The Bubi people are the second largest group at about 6.5%. The country is a member of several international organizations. These include the United Nations, the African Union, and OPEC. While Spanish is the primary official language, French and Portuguese are also official. This linguistic diversity reflects the complex history of colonization and migration in the region.
