This involves pumping a surfactant solution through injection wells into the contaminated zone. The solution captures non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs), which are then pulled out by extraction wells for surface treatment.
Another common method is the "pump and treat" approach. This involves using submersible or vacuum pumps to pull contaminated groundwater to the surface. The water then passes through vessels containing materials like granular activated carbon to adsorb the pollutants. For specific chemicals like BTEX compounds found in gasoline, air stripping can be very effective. While pump and treat is useful for controlling the hydraulic gradient to stop pollution from spreading, it is often a slow and expensive process. It can also be difficult to reach the very low concentration levels required by strict environmental standards.
When contaminants cannot be fully removed, workers may use physical barriers to contain them. Barrier walls are made of impermeable materials that resist deterioration from contact with waste.
Different countries follow different regulatory standards to ensure the environment is truly safe. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides Regional Screening Levels (RSLs), which are part of a comprehensive set of Preliminary Remediation Goals. In Europe, many nations use what are known as the Dutch standards, though the European Union is working toward unified standards. Canada manages remediation through individual provinces, guided by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. These rules ensure that whether a site is being cleaned for a park or a high-density housing project, the results meet safety requirements.
