As time passed, Enver became one of the most powerful leaders in the land.
After World War I ended, Enver had to leave the empire.
İsmâil Enver Pasha was a major military officer and a central leader in the Ottoman Empire.
Enver's rise began with his education and early military career. He was born in Constantinople on November 23, 1881. His father, Ahmed Bey, lived in the Balkans. Enver attended the Ottoman Military Academy and graduated in 1902. He was a "mektebli," which means an officer educated in a new military college. During his studies, he was a classmate of Mustafa Kemal, the future president of Turkey. The two men developed a rivalry that lasted many years.
In Macedonia, Enver built a reputation as a skilled soldier. Between 1903 and 1908, he participated in 54 different engagements. Most of these battles were against Bulgarian bands. He became an expert in counter-insurgency, which is the practice of fighting small, irregular groups. Because of his success, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He also received several honors, including the Mecidiye and Osmaniye medals. These military successes led him to join the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP). He wanted to use his influence to reform the Ottoman military.
Enver played a vital role in the Young Turk Revolution of 1908.

After the 1913 coup d'état, Enver reached the height of his power. He became the War Minister and the de facto Commander-in-Chief. Although the Sultan held the official title of Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Enver made the major military decisions. He helped form an alliance with Germany. This alliance was a major reason the Ottoman Empire entered World War I.
Enver's leadership is also tied to very dark periods in history. He and Talaat Pasha were principal leaders during the late Ottoman genocides. These were organized actions that caused massive loss of life. Historical records indicate that between 800,000 and 1,500,000 Armenians died. Additionally, 750,000 Assyrians and 500,000 Greeks were killed. These events are part of the heavy history of the empire's final years.
Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, Enver fled the country. An Ottoman Military Tribunal held a trial for the Unionists. The court convicted Enver and others in absentia, meaning the trial happened while they were gone. He was sentenced to death for bringing the empire into the war and for organizing massacres. Enver escaped to Central Asia. There, he led the Basmachi Revolt against the Bolsheviks. He was killed during this conflict. His remains were eventually moved back to Turkey in 1996.
