He worked hard to help his people. He joined a group to fight for freedom. He even went to school in China.
Later, he worked for a man named Robert Mugabe. He held many jobs in the government.
Now, he is the president of his land. He was chosen by the people in an election. 
Emmerson Mnangagwa is the president of Zimbabwe. 
He was born in 1942. His family were farmers. His father was active in politics. This caused the family to move to a new land. In this new place, Mnangagwa met Robert Mugabe. Mugabe helped inspire him to fight for his country's freedom.
Mnangagwa joined a group to fight for independence. He went to China for training. He also helped lead a group called the Crocodile Gang. He was later arrested and spent ten years in prison. After he was free, he studied law. He became a top aide to Robert Mugabe.
He held many high jobs in the government. He was a minister and the Speaker of Parliament. During his time in power, many people were treated unfairly. This was a very hard time for the country. In 2017, he lost his job. Soon after, the military took control. This helped Mnangagwa become president. He won elections in 2018 and 2023.

This allowed Mnangagwa to become the president of Zimbabwe. He won his first full term in the 2018 election. He was re-elected again in 2023 with 52.6% of the vote. 
Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is a prominent Zimbabwean politician. He has served as the president of Zimbabwe since 2017. 
Mnangagwa was born on 15 September 1942 in Shabani, Southern Rhodesia. He belonged to the Karanga people, a subgroup of the Shona ethnic group. His family was large, and his parents, Mafidhi and Mhurai, were politically active farmers. In 1952, his father's political activism led to his arrest by a white land development officer. As a result, the family moved to Northern Rhodesia in 1955. While living in Mumbwa, Mnangagwa met Robert Mugabe. Mugabe became a major influence on his political views.
Mnangagwa's education shaped his identity and his political activism. He attended several schools, including Myooye School and Mumbwa Boarding School. He later enrolled at Hodgson Technical College to study industrial building. It was during his school years that he adopted the name "Emmerson" from a book by Ralph Waldo Emerson. His activism grew during his time at college. In 1960, he was expelled from Hodgson after being found guilty of setting fire to a building. He later worked in construction and served as a youth league secretary.
His involvement in the liberation struggle involved international training and military groups. In 1962, he joined the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU). He received military training in Tanganyika, specifically in Mbeya and Iringa. Later, he joined the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU), a breakaway group. Mnangagwa traveled to Egypt for training at the Egyptian Military Academy. He also spent time in China, studying at Peking University's School of Marxism. He studied military engineering and combat training in Nanjing before returning to Africa.
Upon his return, Mnangagwa co-founded the Crocodile Gang.
After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, Mnangagwa held several senior positions under Robert Mugabe. From 1980 to 1988, he was the first minister of state security. In this role, he oversaw the Central Intelligence Organisation. His tenure is controversial due to his role in the Gukurahundi massacres. During these events, thousands of Ndebele civilians were killed in the Matabeleland region.
Mnangagwa's path to the presidency involved a major political shift in 2017. He had been serving as Mugabe's first vice-president since 2014. However, internal political conflicts arose between his faction and the faction led by Grace Mugabe. In November 2017, Mugabe dismissed Mnangagwa from his positions. Mnangagwa fled to South Africa, but a coup d'état soon followed. Backed by General Constantino Chiwenga and the military, the coup led to Mugabe's resignation. Mnangagwa then returned to Zimbabwe to assume the presidency.
Since taking office, Mnangagwa has won two major elections. He secured his first full term in the 2018 general election. He was re-elected in the 2023 general election, receiving 52.6% of the vote.
