Elephant Island is a cold, icy place in the Southern Ocean.
The island is a very rugged and windy place. It is mostly covered in ice and has many high peaks. The highest point is called Mount Pendragon. The weather is often foggy and brings a lot of snow. Strong winds can blow across the landscape. The main glacier on the island is the Endurance Glacier.
People first discovered this island in 1821. A Russian expedition led by Fabian von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev found it. They named it Mordvinov Island to honor a person. Captain George Powell also saw it early on. He thought the island looked like an elephant's head. He also saw elephant seals there, which is how it got its English name.
Many animals visit the island during warmer times. Thousands of chinstrap, gentoo, and macaroni penguins come here to mate and breed.
Elephant Island is famous because of the explorer Ernest Shackleton. In 1916, his ship, the Endurance, was lost in the ice. Shackleton and 27 men reached the island after a very hard journey. They stayed at a place called Point Wild. They built a small shack using parts of their lifeboats to stay safe.

Elephant Island is a mountainous, ice-covered landmass in the Southern Ocean.
The island's geology is part of the Scotia metamorphic complex. This complex formed through a process involving the Scotia subduction zone. During the Cretaceous period, sea floor sediments were scraped off and underwent metamorphism. Metamorphism is a process where rocks change due to intense heat and pressure. This created rocks called phyllites, blueschists, and greenschists. These rocks are part of an accretionary wedge. The rocks are visible at the surface because of uplift along the Shackleton Fault Zone. This zone meets the South Scotia Ridge. The rock types here are very similar to those found in coastal California.
The physical landscape of Elephant Island is rugged and harsh. It is oriented approximately east-to-west. The highest point on the island is Mount Pendragon. The Endurance Glacier serves as the main discharge glacier. The weather is typically characterized by fog and heavy snow. Winds on the island can be very strong. Several named features define its geography. Cape Yelcho, Cape Valentine, and Cape Lookout mark the extremes. Point Wild is a specific spit located on the north coast.
Life on the island is limited by its barren environment. There is no native terrestrial flora or fauna. This means no plants or animals live permanently on the land. However, seasonal colonies of birds arrive during warmer periods. Thousands of chinstrap, gentoo, and macaroni penguins congregate there to mate and breed.

History began with the discovery of the island in 1821. A Russian Antarctic expedition discovered it on January 29, 1821. This expedition was led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. They used the sloop-of-war Vostok and the support vessel Mirny. They named the land Mordvinov Island. Later, Captain George Powell sighted the island and elephant seals there. He attributed the name Elephant Island to its head-like shape.
The island is most famous for the Endurance expedition in 1916. The explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew of 28 men reached the island. They had been drifting on ice floes after losing their ship, the Endurance. The crew first arrived at Cape Valentine. They later moved to Point Wild for better protection from the sea. Shackleton and five men sailed the lifeboat James Caird to South Georgia.

Today, Elephant Island remains a place of scientific and historical interest. The Brazilian Antarctic Program maintains the Goeldi shelter there. This supports up to six researchers during the summer. The island also contains important historic sites. Point Wild is home to the Endurance Memorial Site. This site includes a bust of Captain Pardo and several plaques.
