Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker also invented the electromagnetic pickups that make the instrument work. In 1932, the Ro-Pat-In Corporation began making them in Los Angeles. By 1934, the company changed its name to the Rickenbacker Electro Stringed Instrument Company. Beauchamp later applied for a patent for the instrument in 1934, which was issued in 1937.

Many famous models were created as technology improved. In 1935, the Electro-Spanish Ken Roberts was one of the first electric guitars meant to be played while standing up.
