Charles Barrington, a man from Ireland, reached the top with Swiss guides Christian Almer and Peter Bohren. They used the west flank for their route. However, the north face remained a mystery for many decades. It was considered the "last problem" of the Alps. It was viewed as an incredibly dangerous and difficult challenge for mountaineers.

The north face was finally conquered on July 24, 1938.

An Austrian-German expedition of four men completed the climb. This group included Andreas Heckmair, Ludwig Vörg, Heinrich Harrer, and Fritz Kasparek.
