To measure these vast distances, Hubble relied on a specific type of star called a Cepheid variable. These stars are known for their predictable pulsation periods, or the time it takes to flicker. In 1908, Henrietta Swan Leavitt discovered a direct relationship between a Cepheid's luminosity, or brightness, and its pulsation period. Hubble used this relationship as a cosmic measuring tool. By comparing how bright a star appeared to be with its actual intrinsic luminosity, he could calculate how far away it was. 
In 1924, Hubble applied these methods to several objects, including the Andromeda and Triangulum nebulae. He proved conclusively that these were not local clouds, but entire galaxies outside our own. This discovery was met with significant skepticism from the scientific establishment. For example, astronomer Harlow Shapley opposed his findings. Despite this, Hubble published his results in The New York Times in 1924 and presented them to the American Astronomical Society in 1925. His formal peer-reviewed publication on the Andromeda galaxy followed in 1929. His success earned him the American Association Prize and a five-hundred-dollar award.
Hubble also developed a way to organize the many different types of galaxies we see. He created a classification scheme based on how galaxies appear in photographic images. This system is known as the Hubble sequence, and it is often visualized using the Hubble Tuning Fork diagram.
In 1929, Hubble made a second monumental discovery regarding the movement of galaxies. He examined the relationship between galactic distances and their radial velocities. A radial velocity is the speed at which an object moves toward or away from an observer. He used redshifts to determine these velocities. A redshift occurs when light from an object is stretched, indicating the object is moving away. Hubble found that the recessional velocity of a galaxy increases as its distance from Earth increases. This discovery is known as Hubble's law.
This law implies that the universe is constantly expanding. While Hubble provided the observational proof, the Belgian priest and scientist Georges Lemaître had proposed this idea theoretically two years earlier. Lemaître used Albert Einstein's equations of general relativity to suggest the universe was expanding. Hubble's work, combined with earlier evidence of redshifts from Vesto Slipher, provided the physical evidence needed to support this expanding model. Hubble's initial measurements of 46 galaxies suggested a Hubble constant of 500 km/s/Mpc. Modern measurements are much lower, around 68 to 74 km/s/Mpc, because Hubble's original distance calibrations contained errors.
Hubble's life was not always focused on the stars. Born in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri, he was a gifted athlete in football, baseball, and track. He even led the University of Chicago basketball team to a Big Ten Conference title in 1907. Because of a promise to his father, he studied jurisprudence, or law, at Oxford University. He only returned to his true passion of astronomy after his father died in 1913. He eventually earned his Ph.D. in 1921 from the University of Chicago after studying at the Yerkes Observatory.
Beyond his work in space, Hubble contributed to military science during World War II. He worked as a civilian for the United States Army at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. He served as the Chief of the External Ballistics Branch of the Ballistic Research Laboratory. During this time, he developed equipment like a high-speed clock camera to study projectiles in flight. This research improved the performance of bombs and rockets, earning him the Legion of Merit. Today, his legacy lives on through the Hubble Space Telescope, which was named in his honor.
