The economy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) is a massive and complex system.
China's economic structure relies on several different types of organizations. It includes state-owned enterprises (SOEs), which are companies owned by the government. It also features mixed-ownership enterprises and a massive private sector. The private sector plays a vital role in the daily lives of citizens. It contributes about 60% of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Furthermore, private businesses provide 80% of urban employment and 90% of all new jobs.
In terms of global scale, China holds a massive position. It has the world's second-largest economy by nominal GDP. However, since 2016, it has been the largest when measured by purchasing power parity (PPP). PPP is a way to measure how much people can actually buy with their money. In 2025, China accounted for 19% of the global economy in PPP terms. It also represented around 17% in nominal terms.
China is famously known as the "factory of the world."

The history of China's economy shows incredible changes over time.
One of the most significant achievements was the reduction of extreme poverty. Between 1978 and 2018, China reduced extreme poverty by 800 million people. The percentage of the population in extreme poverty dropped from 88.1% in 1981 to just 0.2% by 2019. This growth also transformed the country's trade balance. China's current account surplus grew from $5.67 billion in 1982 to $317 billion in 2021. This massive increase shows how much more the country sells to the rest of the world. The economy has moved from low-wage clothing production to complex items like automobiles and pharmaceuticals.
Economic development is not spread evenly across the entire country.
