She deposits the egg, which is about 15 mm long, directly into her pouch. After 10 days of gestation, the baby, called a puggle, hatches. The puggle uses a reptile-like egg tooth to break the shell. It lacks teats and must suck milk from two milk patches on the mother. The puggle stays in the pouch for 45 to 55 days. At this point, the young echidna begins to develop its spines.

Echidnas are part of a complex biological system involving unique evolutionary paths. Their brain structure is different from humans, with the neocortex making up only half of the brain. They also show interesting sleep patterns. An echidna only enters REM sleep when the temperature is around 25 °C (77 °F). If the temperature is 15 °C or 28 °C, REM sleep is suppressed. Their survival depends on finding shelter in caves, rock crevices, or animal burrows. They must also avoid predators like feral cats, foxes, and snakes. Protecting their habitat helps ensure these unique mammals continue to thrive.
