Scientists look for worlds that are like our own. These are called Earth analogs. 

Many things make a planet like Earth. It should be a terrestrial planet. This means it has a solid surface. Size is also important. Most experts look for planets about the same size as Earth. 
We have studied other worlds to learn more. Long ago, people thought Mars was like Earth. Now we know it is a dry, cratered world. We also looked at Venus. It is much hotter than Earth. Even Saturn's moon, Titan, has some Earth-like parts. It has lakes and rivers. 
An Earth analog is a planet or moon with conditions like our own. Scientists often call these "Earth twins" or "second Earths." 

To be an Earth analog, a planet must meet many rules. It usually needs to be a terrestrial planet. This means it has a solid, rocky surface. 

Our ideas about other worlds have changed over time. Between 1858 and 1920, many thought Mars was very much like Earth. 


Modern tools help us find these distant worlds. The Kepler space telescope began looking for planets in 2011. In 2015, scientists announced Kepler-452b was a near-Earth sized candidate. 
Finding a true twin is hard because many things must work together. A planet needs the right weather, oceans, and air. It might even need a strong magnetosphere to stay safe.

Modern technology has accelerated the search for these distant worlds. The Kepler space telescope began observing potential terrestrial planets in 2011. In 2015, scientists announced the discovery of Kepler-452b, a near-Earth sized candidate orbiting a solar candidate. 

There are different scientific perspectives on how common these worlds are. The mediocrity principle suggests that Earth-like planets should be common throughout the universe. Conversely, the Rare Earth hypothesis suggests that such planets are extremely rare. In 2020, astronomers identified 24 "superhabitable" planets, which are candidates that might be even better than Earth for life. These findings help connect the study of individual planets to the broader understanding of how life and geology interact across the cosmos.
