This decline was attributed to the rise of general-purpose tablets that provided reading apps. By 2014, global e-reader sales had dropped to around 12 million. Interestingly, a 2011 survey in the UK found that 6% of people over 55 owned an e-reader, compared to 5% of those aged 18 to 24.

E-readers also operate within specific digital ecosystems. Many devices are designed to work primarily with the online shop of a single provider. This structure helps smaller companies compete against large multinational corporations. However, it can limit a customer's ability to purchase books from the open market. Some newer devices, such as those from Onyx Boox or Meebook, run an open Android system. These allow users to download books from any source or use a web browser. There are even e-readers with open Linux systems, such as the PineNote from Pine64.

The rise of e-readers has had a substantial impact on the global publishing industry. It sparked many predictions regarding the potential disappearance of printed books and periodicals. In the European Union, legal and tax changes have also affected the market. For a long time, e-books were taxed differently than paper books because they were viewed as a service. This changed in October 2018, when the EU allowed member countries to charge the same VAT for e-books as for paper books. This shift helps align the digital and physical publishing markets.
