It is important to distinguish dynamite from Trinitrotoluene, commonly known as TNT. Although cartoons often use the names interchangeably, they are chemically different. TNT is a second-generation explosive used mostly by the military for artillery shells and bombs. It is highly stable and can be melted at 80 degrees Celsius to be poured into shells. Dynamite, however, is a first-generation explosive intended for civilian use. It is more powerful by weight than TNT but is less stable in warfare because it can be detonated by a wayward bullet. While TNT is waterproof and insensitive, dynamite is better suited for the heavy lifting required in civilian earthmoving projects.
