Long-term exposure to fine particles can cause silicosis, which is an incurable lung condition. It can even lead to lung cancer or asphyxiation. Severe cases of eye irritation can cause keratoconjunctivitis sicca, also known as dry eyes, which may lead to blindness. Economically, storms cause the loss of fertile topsoil. They remove nutrient-rich organic matter from the land. This reduces agricultural productivity and can damage young crops through abrasion.

Despite the damage, dust can also provide unexpected benefits to some ecosystems. When dust settles in new places, it carries essential minerals. Central and South American rainforests receive significant nutrients from Saharan dust. In the ocean, dust provides iron to regions that are naturally iron-poor. In Hawaii, dust can actually increase the growth of plantains. In places like the mid-western U.S., ancient dust deposits called loess have created highly fertile soils. These soils were formed by much older dust storms in the past.

These atmospheric events are not unique to Earth. Dust storms also occur on the planet Mars. On Mars, solar heating warms the atmosphere and causes the air to move. This movement lifts dust off the Martian surface. Martian storms can be much larger than those on Earth. They can sometimes grow to encircle the entire planet. However, the atmosphere on Mars has much lower pressure than Earth's. Because of this, Martian winds cannot reach the intense hurricane-force speeds seen on our planet. ]
