There are three main ways to group these dry periods. First is meteorological drought, which is a lack of precipitation like rain or snow.

Second is hydrological drought, which happens when water in lakes, rivers, and underground storage falls too low. This type often moves more slowly because it uses stored water. Scientists categorize droughts based on where the moisture deficit occurs in the water cycle. The first type is meteorological drought, which happens due to a lack of precipitation. This type usually precedes other forms of drought. The second type is hydrological drought, which relates to low runoff, streamflow, and groundwater storage.

This type often develops more slowly because it involves using stored water that is not being replenished. The third type is agricultural or ecological drought. This occurs when plants experience stress from low soil moisture and high evaporation. Some experts also include socioeconomic drought, which happens when water demand exceeds the available supply.
