Most of these fossils come from the Dinosaur Park Formation. This is a layer of rock made by rivers long ago. These rivers flowed toward the Western Interior Seaway. The rocks were laid down between 76.5 and 74.8 million years ago. This happened during the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous epoch. The rocks formed in places like floodplains and coastal plains. This process took about 1.5 million years to finish. Three different rock layers exist in the park. The Oldman Formation is the oldest layer at the bottom. The Bearpaw Formation is the layer on top.
