After his military service and various studies, he eventually graduated from Victoria College in 1932.

His rise to international fame was marked by several distinct competitive stages. First, he played for the Indian Army team during a successful tour of New Zealand. This team won 18 matches and lost only one. Next, he participated in the inaugural Inter-Provincial Tournament in India. Playing as a centre-forward for the United Provinces team, he used clever stick-work to attract attention. His ability to make penetrating runs and judicious passes helped secure his spot on the national Olympic team. This selection process was vital for the newly formed Indian Hockey Federation (IHF).
