He originally named the area North Devon after a place in England. The name changed to Devon Island by the end of the 1800s. In 1924, an outpost was established at Dundas Harbour. This was later leased to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1933. In 1934, 52 Baffin Island Inuit families moved to the harbour. However, the wind and cold made life there a disaster. One of the most significant features is the Haughton impact crater. This crater was created approximately 39 million years ago. A meteorite about 10 kilometers in diameter crashed into the area.
