Cape Vera is another IBA known for northern fulmar populations. These specific spots provide much-needed resources in a barren landscape.
The history of European contact began in 1616. Robert Bylot and William Baffin were the first Europeans to sight the island. Later, William Edward Parry charted the south coast between 1819 and 1820. He originally named the area North Devon after a place in England. The name changed to Devon Island by the end of the 1800s. In 1924, an outpost was established at Dundas Harbour. This was later leased to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1933. In 1934, 52 Baffin Island Inuit families moved to the harbour. However, the wind and cold made life there a disaster. The families left in 1936. The harbour was used again in the late 1940s but closed in 1951.
One of the most significant features is the Haughton impact crater. This crater was created approximately 39 million years ago. A meteorite about 10 kilometers in diameter crashed into the area. At that time, the region was covered in forests. The impact left a crater about 15 kilometers in diameter. For several million years, this crater was actually a lake. Scientists have recovered many fossils from the Haughton crater lake deposits. These include a rhinoceros named Epiaceratherium. They also found Puijila darwini, which is an ancestor of the modern seal.
Today, Devon Island is a vital site for space science. The Haughton–Mars Project (HMP) has studied the area since 1997. This project is a complementary scientific program for NASA. The island is considered one of the best Mars analog sites in the world. An analog site is a place on Earth that mimics another environment. The surface of Devon Island looks very similar to the surface of Mars. The freezing temperatures and extreme isolation provide perfect research opportunities. Scientists use the island to simulate the challenges of long-duration space flights. They study how humans might live on other planets.
Research continues through the Devon Island Research Station. This station was established in 1960 and is maintained by the Arctic Institute of North America. It is located in the Truelove Lowland on the northeast coast. The Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station project also operates here. In 2004, scientists used the environment to simulate working on Mars. In 2007, a simulation period included 20 different scientific studies. Even astronauts like Jeremy Hansen have prepared for Mars by working at Haughton Crater. The island remains a crucial link between Earth science and space exploration.
