The Deutsches Museum is a very big museum.

The Deutsches Museum is a huge place for learning.
The museum sits on a special island in the Isar river.
A man named Oskar von Miller helped start the museum.

The museum has a long and sometimes difficult history.
Today, the museum has several different branches to explore.

The Deutsches Museum is the largest museum of science and technology in the world.
The main museum site is located on a small island in the Isar river. This location was originally known as Kohleninsel, or Coal Island. It was later renamed Museumsinsel, which means Museum Island. Before 1772, the island had no permanent buildings. This was because the area was regularly flooded. In 1772, the Isar barracks were built on the island. After a major flood in 1899, the buildings were rebuilt with better flood protection. The Munich city council eventually donated the island to the museum project.
Oskar von Miller was the central figure in the museum's founding. He was an electrical engineer who gained fame for building a 57 km high voltage line in 1882. In 1903, he organized a meeting of the Association of German Engineers to propose the museum. A small group of supporters donated 260,000 marks to start the cause. They formed a Provisional Committee to manage the early stages. The museum's original name was the "German Museum for Masterpieces of Natural Science and Technology." This name emphasized the importance of science to the German people.
The museum's history includes periods of great growth and significant destruction. The permanent museum building finally opened on May 2, 1925. This was Oskar von Miller's 70th birthday. However, the museum suffered heavily during World War II. By the end of 1944, air bombings had damaged or destroyed 80% of the buildings. Additionally, 20% of the museum's exhibits were lost. After the war, the museum closed for repairs. It also served as a temporary home for various groups, including the College of Technology.
Following the war, the museum gradually expanded its reach and size. In the 1950s, the collections focused more on natural sciences. By 1965, the exhibit area finally matched its pre-war size. In the 1970s, the mission changed to explain the cultural significance of technology. The museum also faced a setback in the early 1980s due to arson. This fire damaged several exhibits and reduced the space to 34,140 square meters. Massive reconstruction efforts eventually increased the total exhibit space to 55,000 square meters by 1993.
The Deutsches Museum operates several specialized branches to house its massive collection. The Flugwerft Schleißheim branch is located 18 kilometers north of Munich. It is situated on one of Germany's first military airbases. This branch displays airplanes that were too large for the main site. Notable exhibits include a Horten flying wing glider and unique VTOL planes.

The museum's collections are incredibly diverse, covering everything from ancient history to modern space travel. For example, it features a reproduction of the Altamira Cave to show Stone Age paintings.
