In the 1990s, things changed for the country. Sassou Nguesso introduced multiparty politics in 1990. This meant more than one political party could exist. However, a large meeting in 1991 took away much of his power. He ran for president in 1992 but came in third place. This led to a very difficult time. A civil war began in 1993 between different groups. One group was called the Cobras, which supported Sassou Nguesso. Another group was called the Ninjas. This fighting caused many people to leave their homes.

Before this, he led the People's Republic of the Congo from 1979 to 1992. His political career is defined by long periods of leadership and significant shifts in the nation's governing systems. He has navigated through military rule, socialist doctrines, and multiparty democracy. His influence has shaped the political landscape of the Congo for many decades.

Sassou Nguesso's rise began with his military training and service. He joined the army in 1960, just before the country gained independence. He received training in Algeria and later studied in France.

He graduated as a lieutenant and joined the elite paratroop regiment. He became a key officer in the Airborne Group, the first paratroop battalion in the Congolese Army. This unit was created by Marien Ngouabi in 1965. Through his military roles, he rose from captain to colonel in 1978 and eventually to army general in 1989.

His political journey was closely tied to the Congolese Labor Party, or PCT. This was a communist party that followed a Marxist–Leninist doctrine. In 1968, he participated in a military coup that brought Marien Ngouabi to power. Sassou Nguesso became a founding member of the National Revolution Council. By 1973, he was the Director of State Security. At age 32, he was appointed Minister of Defense and Security. Following the assassination of President Ngouabi in 1977, Sassou Nguesso acted as the interim head of state for several weeks.

In 1979, Sassou Nguesso was confirmed as the official president for a five-year term. During this first period of presidency, he managed the country's economic and international relations. He negotiated loans from the International Monetary Fund to support the economy. He also worked with foreign companies to extract oil and minerals. While he maintained a friendship pact with the Soviet Union, he relied heavily on France. The French oil company Elf Aquitaine helped double oil production. France provided up to 50% of the country's foreign aid, while the Soviet Union provided less than 1.5%.

Political shifts in the 1990s changed his path to power. In 1990, he introduced multiparty politics to the nation. However, a National Conference in 1991 stripped him of his executive powers. He became a ceremonial head of state and placed third in the 1992 presidential election. This period led to political instability and civil war. In 1993, armed militia groups began fighting. These included the Cobras, who supported Sassou Nguesso, and the Ninjas, who supported other leaders.
