Deimos is a gray, rocky body. It is not a perfect circle. It has a bumpy shape. The surface has many holes called craters. Two craters have special names. They are Swift and Voltaire. They are named after famous writers. 
Scientists wonder how Deimos began. Some think it was an asteroid caught by Mars. Others think it came from a larger object that broke apart. 
Deimos has very little gravity. This means it does not pull on things very hard. If you jumped on Deimos, you might fly into space! A single jump could reach the escape velocity. That is the speed needed to leave the moon's pull.

Scientists are still trying to figure out how Deimos was made. One idea is that it was an asteroid captured by Mars. This would mean a rock from the asteroid belt drifted too close and got stuck in orbit. Another idea is that the moons formed right where they are now. Some think a giant collision once filled Mars with many small moon-sized objects. Recently, researchers suggested that Deimos and Phobos might have come from one large parent body. They think this body was hit by something and shattered 1 to 2.7 billion years ago. 
Asaph Hall discovered Deimos on August 12, 1877. He was working at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. Hall was specifically searching for moons around Mars at that time. He found Deimos at about 07:48 UTC. Not long after, he also discovered the other moon, Phobos. 
Deimos has a very interesting shape and surface. It is not a perfect sphere but is shaped more like a lumpy rock. It is about 57% the size of Phobos. The moon is covered in craters, but its surface is smoother than Phobos because of regolith. Regolith is a layer of loose, dusty material that fills in the holes. 
If you stood on Mars, Deimos would look very different than our Moon. It would appear as a tiny, bright dot, almost like a star. 

Deimos is the smaller and outer of the two natural satellites orbiting the planet Mars. Its sibling is the moon Phobos, which orbits much closer to the red planet. 
Scientists have several competing hypotheses regarding the origin of the Martian moons. One major theory is that Deimos was a captured object from the asteroid belt. This would mean an asteroid drifted near Mars and became trapped by its gravity. To stay in a circular orbit, the object would have needed to lose energy through atmospheric drag or tidal forces. Another hypothesis suggests that the moons formed exactly where they are today through accretion. A third idea proposes that a massive collision with a planetesimal once surrounded Mars with many small bodies. 
Asaph Hall III was the astronomer responsible for the discovery of Deimos. He was working at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. Hall was specifically searching for Martian moons at the time. He discovered Deimos on August 12, 1877, at approximately 07:48 UTC. Shortly after this discovery, he also found Phobos. 
Physically, Deimos is a highly non-spherical body with triaxial dimensions. It is composed of rock that is rich in carbonaceous material. This composition is very similar to C-type asteroids and carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. The surface is covered in craters, but it appears smoother than Phobos due to regolith. Regolith is a layer of loose, porous dust that partially fills the impact craters. 
Observation of Deimos from the surface of Mars would be quite unique. To a naked-eye observer on Mars, Deimos would look like a small, bright star. Its angular diameter is no more than 2.5 minutes, which is only one-twelfth the width of our Moon seen from Earth. 

Deimos also performs regular solar transits as viewed from the Martian surface. A transit occurs when the moon passes directly in front of the Sun. Because Deimos is small, it does not cause a total eclipse. Instead, it appears as a small black dot moving across the solar disk. 
Humanity has proposed many missions to explore Deimos and bring its secrets to Earth. The Aladdin mission was a finalist in the NASA Discovery Program to collect samples from the moons. Other concepts include the Hall mission and the Gulliver mission, which aims to return 1 kilogram of material. The JAXA MMX Mission is currently planned for launch in October 2026. This mission will perform flybys of Deimos to investigate its structure. Exploring Deimos could also serve as a vital step for humans traveling to Mars. The moon's dust might even be used for aerobraking during future space colonization efforts.
