The total area of primary forest—mature, undisturbed rainforest—has decreased by over 80 million hectares since 1990.

While the rate of deforestation has actually decreased over the last three decades, the impact remains high. For example, between 2015 and 2020, the rate was approximately 10 million hectares per year. This is down from a rate of 16 million hectares per year in the 1990s. On average, roughly 2,400 trees are cut down every single minute.

Different regions experience these changes in unique ways. In the period between 2010 and 2020, Africa had the largest annual rate of net forest loss at 3.9 million hectares. South America followed with a loss of 2.6 million hectares per year. Interestingly, the rate of net loss in South America declined significantly in the most recent decade compared to the previous one. In contrast, Asia saw the highest net gain of forest area during the 2010–2020 period. Tropical primary forests are especially vulnerable. In 2019, nearly one-third of all tree cover loss, or 3.8 million hectares, happened in these humid tropical areas.

Global consumption patterns also drive these environmental shifts. Deforestation is often linked to international trade and the demand for specific commodities. For instance, consumption patterns in G7 countries are estimated to cause an average loss of 3.9 trees per person each year. This loss is often tied to imported goods like coffee.
