In vertebrate animals, decomposition follows five predictable stages. These stages are coupled with two chemical processes: autolysis and putrefaction. Autolysis is the breakdown of tissues by the body's own internal enzymes. Putrefaction is the breakdown of tissues caused by bacteria. The first stage is the fresh stage. It begins immediately after the heart stops beating. During this time, the body undergoes algor mortis, where it matches the ambient temperature. Muscles may become rigid during rigor mortis, occurring within three to six hours. Gravity also causes blood to settle in lower areas, a process called livor mortis.

The second stage is the bloat stage. This occurs because of microbial proliferation, or putrefaction. As anaerobic organisms multiply, they consume carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. This produces gases like methane, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide. These gases accumulate in the bodily cavity, causing the abdomen to distend. This gas buildup can force fluids out of natural orifices. It can also cause the skin to rupture. During this stage, intestinal bacteria can turn hemoglobin into sulfhemoglobin. This process gives the body a marbled appearance.

Next is the active decay stage. This period is characterized by the greatest loss of body mass. This mass loss results from the intense feeding of maggots and the purging of decomposition fluids. These purged fluids accumulate around the body to create a cadaver decomposition island, or CDI. This area experiences significant changes in soil chemistry. The end of active decay is marked when maggots migrate away to pupate. Following this is the advanced decay stage. During this phase, decomposition slows because there is less available material. Insect activity also decreases significantly.

The final stage is the dry or remains stage. At this point, the ecosystem begins to recover from the disturbance. The CDI shows an increase in soil nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. While plant growth may return, it can take several years for the ecosystem to reach its pre-disturbance state. All that remains are dry skin, cartilage, and bones. If all soft tissue is gone, the remains are called completely skeletonized. If only parts are visible, they are partially skeletonized. Eventually, soil acids may even reduce the bones to unrecognizable components.

Many environmental factors influence the speed of decomposition. Temperature is the most critical variable. Warm temperatures increase the rate of decay, while cold temperatures decrease it. Humidity and moisture also play roles, as microbes need moisture to grow. Access by scavengers and insects is also vital. In tropical regions, invertebrates can reduce a corpse to bone in under two weeks. Casper's Law provides a way to compare different environments. It states that a body decomposes twice as fast in air as in water. It also decomposes eight times faster in air than when buried in earth.
