As a child, he sold newspapers to help his family. By age 15, he began working full-time to support them after his father became ill. A chance encounter led him to a job as an office boy at the Commercial Cable Company. He soon moved to the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America in 1906. Sarnoff worked his way up from an office boy to a commercial manager. He studied technology and business through hands-on experience and library research. He even served at Marconi stations on ships and in various locations like Nantucket.

During his early years, Sarnoff witnessed several major technological milestones. In 1911, he operated wireless equipment on a ship near Newfoundland and Labrador. He helped relay the first remote medical diagnosis from a ship's doctor to a radio operator. In 1912, he was part of the effort to confirm the fate of the Titanic. Sarnoff also demonstrated the first use of radio on a railroad line in New York and Pennsylvania. He watched Edwin Armstrong demonstrate a regenerative receiver in New Jersey. He even used a hydrogen arc transmitter to demonstrate broadcasting music from a department store. These experiences shaped his vision for the future of electronic communication.

Sarnoff had a unique vision for the purpose of radio technology. Most people at the time viewed radio as a way to send point-to-point messages. In 1928, he met with engineer Vladimir Zworykin to fund television research. While Zworykin initially asked for $100,000, the total cost of the project eventually reached $50 million. RCA faced a major legal battle with inventor Philo T. Farnsworth over television patents. A court ordered RCA to pay $1,000,000 in royalties to Farnsworth to settle the dispute. Despite these hurdles, RCA successfully demonstrated key components like the iconoscope camera tube.
