To prove the design worked, Dassault built a technology demonstrator called the ACX. This aircraft first flew on July 4, 1986. It was piloted by Guy Mitaux-Maurouard during its maiden flight. During that first hour, the plane reached Mach 1.3. The demonstrator underwent an intensive eight-year flight-test programme. In 1990, the aircraft tested the M88 turbofan engine. It achieved supercruise, which means flying at supersonic speeds without using engine reheat. 
The Rafale project faced significant challenges and delays. It was originally scheduled to enter service in 1996. However, post-Cold War budget cuts changed many military priorities. This caused the timeline to shift significantly. Despite these hurdles, the Rafale was officially introduced in 2001. It is built almost entirely within France. Major domestic contractors like Thales and Safran provide critical components. This ensures that France maintains control over its own advanced defense technology.
The Rafale has become a successful international aircraft. Many nations have selected it for their own air forces.
