A sanitorium is a place used for health recovery and rest. They believed the cool climate would be a perfect summer retreat from the heat of the Indian plains.

To establish this retreat, the East India Company negotiated a lease with the Chogyal of Sikkim in 1835. This agreement allowed the British to occupy a strip of land. Archibald Campbell was appointed as the superintendent of Darjeeling in 1839. He oversaw the construction of hotels, courthouses, and British-style bungalows. To build the town, the British recruited thousands of laborers from Nepal, Sikkim, and Bhutan. These workers were drawn by regular wages and lodging. This migration was much different from the forced labor systems used in other nearby kingdoms.

Tea production became a vital part of the region's development. In 1840, Archibald Campbell began experimenting with tea cultivation on the local slopes. These experiments were highly successful, leading to the creation of many tea gardens.

By the year 1900, there were approximately 100 tea gardens in the area. These gardens employed an estimated 64,000 workers. The expansion of the tea industry required massive amounts of land. This led to widespread deforestation, which displaced the indigenous peoples living in the forests.

Transportation to the mountains improved with the arrival of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. This narrow-gauge railway was opened in July 1881. It uses a track width of only two feet.

The railway was designed to bring summer residents to the town and carry tea out for export. It climbs to the Ghoom railway station, which sits at 2,203 meters above sea level. Because of its historical and technical importance, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1999. The railway remains a famous example of mountain engineering.

Education also became a major feature of the city during the British Raj. Because the climate was considered healthy for women and children, many residential schools were established.

St Joseph's College for boys opened in 1888. Other schools, like the Loreto Convent and Queen's Hill School, were also founded. These institutions helped shape the cosmopolitan culture of the town. Today, the local population is made up of descendants of both indigenous groups and the immigrant laborers who built the tea industry.

Modern Darjeeling faces several environmental and social challenges. The economy relies heavily on tourism and the tea industry. In 2005, the World Trade Organization granted Darjeeling tea a geographical indication. This status helps protect the brand and the region that produces it. However, the rapid growth of the population has caused problems. Unregulated construction, traffic congestion, and water shortages are common issues.

Deforestation has also damaged the perennial springs that supply the town with water. Many young people move away from the city because there are not enough jobs that match their specific skills.
