Fahrenheit worked hard to perfect the manufacturing of his instruments. In 1714, he traveled to Berlin and Dresden to work closely with expert glass-blowers. This helped him improve the quality of the glass tubes used in his thermometers. By 1721, he had perfected the process of crafting and standardizing his mercury thermometers. His success led to the widespread adoption of the Fahrenheit scale. This scale became the primary system for weather, industry, and medicine in many English-speaking countries. Even though many places now use the Celsius scale, the Fahrenheit scale remains the standard for weather reports in the United States.
Later in life, Fahrenheit was a respected member of the scientific community. In 1724, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in England. He published several scientific papers in Latin, including a detailed description of his thermometer calibration process. Interestingly, modern researchers have found that his scale was likely derived from Rømer's earlier work. The scale was also later redefined to make the gap between freezing and boiling exactly 180 degrees. This change is why modern body temperature is often listed as 98.6 degrees instead of his original 96 degrees. This mathematical change made the scale easier to use for many different types of calculations.
Fahrenheit died in 1736 at the age of fifty in The Hague.
