It is a central part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. This region has the second-highest GDP in the European Union. Düsseldorf acts as a vital link between cities like Bonn, Cologne, and the Ruhr area.

The name Düsseldorf tells us about its watery beginnings. The name comes from the Düssel River. The suffix "-dorf" is the German word for "village." Therefore, the name literally means "village on the Düssel." In its early days, it was a small community of farmers and fishers.

Over many centuries, this small settlement grew into an international center. Even as it expanded, the original name remained. This is unusual for a major German city. Most large cities have lost their "village" suffixes over time.

The city's rise to power involved significant conflict. In 1288, the Battle of Worringen took place. This was a struggle for power involving the Archbishop of Cologne. The Count of Berg won this battle with local support. Following this victory, the village was granted town privileges. . This event allowed the settlement to grow into a formal city. Later, it became a political center for the United Duchies of Jülich-Cleves-Berg. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it became known for its court culture. The city even hosted a famous art collection in the ducal palace.

In the 19th century, Düsseldorf underwent rapid industrialization. After 1815, the city became part of the Kingdom of Prussia.

Its location on the Rhine was very helpful for trade. The city also sat near the industrial Ruhr region. New railway lines helped move goods and people. Large companies in the iron, steel, and chemical industries settled there. This caused the population to grow quickly. In 1850, there were 40,000 people. By 1882, the population had reached 100,000.

The 20th century brought both destruction and new roles. During World War II, the city was a target for strategic bombing. In 1943, a single night saw over 700 bombers attacking the city. The city also held Nazi prisons and forced labor camps. After the war, the city had to be rebuilt. Much of the old town was reconstructed using modernist styles. In 1946, Düsseldorf became the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. This gave the city a permanent and powerful political role.
