In the Netherlands, the Tekenen voor de fiets design manual recommends a minimum width of 2 meters for paths. If a path must accommodate more than 150 bicycles per hour, the width should increase to 2.5 meters. Cities like Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch also require a 2-meter minimum for new lanes. In North America, cities like Montreal and Davis, California, were early adopters of segregated facilities with barriers.
There is ongoing debate among planners regarding the best way to implement these changes. Some critics argue that infrastructure designs from one country, like the Netherlands, may not work perfectly in every other context. Others worry that dedicated lanes might increase urban air pollution. Some planners advocate for a complete network built in a single phase rather than a piecemeal approach. Conversely, proponents argue that well-implemented lanes effectively relieve both congestion and air pollution.
