Customs workers have three main jobs. First, they collect taxes. These are called tariffs. These taxes are paid on goods from other lands. Second, they help trade move faster. They try to make the steps simple and quick. Third, they keep people safe. They check for dangerous items.

At big airports, you will see special paths.

The red channel is for people with items to show. These items might be over a certain limit. The green channel is for people with nothing to declare. If someone uses the green path but has forbidden items, they may face a fine.

In the United States, officers check many visitors every day.

Customs workers have three main jobs today. First, they handle taxation by collecting duties. These duties are taxes on imports and exports. Second, they work on trade facilitation. This means they make trade faster and easier. They try to simplify all the rules and documents. Third, they focus on security for everyone. They look for risks to keep the country safe.

History shows how these jobs have changed over time. Long ago, customs was mostly about collecting taxes. Recently, the job has grown much larger. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, security became a top priority. This led to much stronger checks on supply chains. The World Customs Organization helps with this work. They released the SAFE framework in 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2018.

Many places use special paths at big airports. These are called red and green channels. The red channel is for people with items to declare. This might include things above a certain limit. The green channel is for people with nothing to declare. Some EU countries also use a blue channel. This is for travelers coming from other EU countries.

In the US, officers check almost one million visitors daily. They look for items like gold, soil, or firearms.

Customs rules can be different in every land. In Germany, you pay tax on items over 22 euros. In the Czech Republic, the tax is 21 percent. Some countries even hire private agencies to help. These agencies check cargo before it arrives at a port. This is sometimes done to stop corruption. However, some people say this can cause delays. Customs remains a key part of how countries work together.

Customs refers to the official authority or agency within a country. These agencies manage the flow of goods, animals, and personal effects across borders. They also control the movement of hazardous items into and out of a nation.

Beyond just checking items, customs agencies play a vital role in a country's administration. They help maintain law, order, and justice while collecting necessary revenue. Today, the role of customs has expanded into three distinct pillars: taxation, security, and trade facilitation.

Taxation is the traditional core function of most customs authorities. This involves the assessment and collection of customs duties, which are also known as tariffs. A tariff is a specific tax placed on the importation or exportation of goods.

When commercial goods arrive but have not yet been cleared, they are held in a special area. This area is often called a bonded store. These goods stay there until the proper taxes are processed through authorized ports.

Trade facilitation is a more modern objective for these agencies. The goal is to streamline the processing of imports and exports. This process aims to reduce the costs associated with international trade transactions. According to UN/CEFACT Recommendation No. 4, facilitation involves managing formalities and documents. By using simplification, harmonization, and standardization, customs can make global trade faster and more economical.

Security has become a critical component of modern customs operations. This shift was driven largely by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, in the United States. Since then, countries have implemented strict control measures for supply chains to identify security risks.

The World Customs Organization provides guidance through the SAFE Framework of Standards. This framework has seen five different editions released in 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2018. These standards help secure and facilitate global trade simultaneously.

Many international airports use a channel system to manage arriving passengers. Most countries utilize red and green channels at major ports. The red channel is for passengers who have goods to declare. This includes items that exceed permitted limits or are prohibited. The green channel is for passengers with nothing to declare.

Entering a channel is a legal declaration. If a person uses the green channel but carries prohibited items, they may face fines or arrest. In the European Union, a blue channel also exists. This is for travelers moving between EU member states, as they do not pay customs duties.

Some nations attempt to manage customs through privatization to reduce corruption. This involves hiring pre-shipment inspection agencies to examine cargo before it arrives. These agencies verify the value of goods so the country can assess the correct taxes. However, this method has faced significant criticism. In some places, such as Bangladesh, research suggests that duty evasion actually increased after privatization. Some experts even view privatization as a "fatal remedy" due to potential shipping delays and incompetence.

Customs regulations and rates vary significantly across the globe. In the United States, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspects nearly one million visitors every day. They screen for items like gold, firearms, and soil. While the average US tariff is 3%, individual duties can range from 0% to 81%. In Europe, rules are often harmonized through the EU Customs Union. For example, in Germany, goods valued between €22 and €150 require a Value-added tax (VAT) of 7% or 19%.
