This family includes many famous trees like redwoods and junipers. There are between 130 and 140 different species in this group. They can be tall trees or smaller shrubs. Most of these plants stay green all year long. We call these evergreen plants. However, a few types like the dawn redwood are deciduous. This means they lose their leaves in the fall.

These plants have very interesting ways of growing. Their leaves can look like tiny needles or small scales. Some leaves grow in pairs that sit at right angles to each other. Most of these plants do not drop leaves one by one. Instead, they drop small sprays of foliage all at once. This special way of shedding leaves is called cladoptosis. The plants also make seed cones. These cones can feel woody or leathery. In some junipers, the cones are even fleshy like berries. The seeds inside often have tiny wings to help them move.

This family has a very long history on Earth. They were very common during the Mesozoic era. The oldest known record is a plant called Austrohamia minuta. This plant lived during the Early Jurassic period in Patagonia.

They are often monoecious, meaning a single plant has both male and female reproductive parts. Some are subdioecious or even dioecious, where male and female parts are on separate plants. This family is vital to Earth's ecosystems and human history. Many species are famous for their size, longevity, or useful wood.

Growth patterns in Cupressaceae are quite specific. The leaves may be arranged spirally or in decussate patterns. Decussate means the leaves grow in opposite pairs. Each pair sits at a 90-degree angle to the pair below it. Leaves can also grow in decussate whorls of three or four. On young plants, leaves often look like needles. As the plant matures, these leaves may become small and scale-like. Most species are evergreen, keeping their leaves for two to ten years. However, three genera—Glyptostrobus, Metasequoia, and Taxodium—are deciduous.

Many species use a process called cladoptosis to shed foliage. Instead of dropping individual leaves, they drop small sprays of foliage all at once. This is a unique way of managing old growth. The seed cones also show great variety. They can be woody, leathery, or even fleshy and berry-like in the genus Juniperus. The scales of these cones are often fused together. At the very tip, a small spine called an umbo may be visible.

Seeds are typically small and flattened. Most have two narrow wings to help with dispersal. Some seeds are even wingless or have one much larger wing than the other.

The history of Cupressaceae spans millions of years. The family reached its peak diversity during the Mesozoic era. The oldest definitive record is Austrohamia minuta from the Early Jurassic in Patagonia. Scientists note that Austrohamia looks similar to modern Taiwania or Cunninghamia. During the Middle to Late Jurassic, these plants were abundant in warm, tropical regions. Their diversity continued to grow through the Cretaceous period. Molecular studies show they are the sister group to yews. This means they shared a common ancestor during the early-to-mid Triassic.

Cupressaceae members are found almost everywhere on Earth. They exist on every continent except Antarctica. They range from 70°N in arctic Norway to 55°S in Chile.

Some species, like Juniperus indica, grow at high altitudes of 4,930 meters in Tibet. While they occupy most habitats, they are rare in deserts and polar tundras. However, Cupressus dupreziana can tolerate the severe drought of the central Sahara. Many species have very restricted distributions. This family includes some of the most impressive plants on the planet. Sequoia sempervirens is currently the tallest tree in the world. Sequoiadendron giganteum is the largest tree in the world. Six of the ten longest-lived tree species also belong to this family. Humans have used these plants for many purposes. Calocedrus decurrens is used to make wooden pencils. Juniperus virginiana produces fragrant heartwood used in clothes chests. Even the fleshy cones of Juniperus communis are used to flavor gin.

Beyond industry, these trees hold great cultural significance. The ahuehuete is the national tree of Mexico. The bald cypress is the state tree of Louisiana. Coast redwoods and giant sequoias are major tourist attractions in California. These trees also play a role in complex biological systems. Recent studies have found symbioses between these trees and endophytes. Endophytes are fungi or bacteria that live inside the plant. These relationships may be important for the future of agroforestry and medicine.
