They can be linked to fair weather waterspouts over open water or landspouts over land. In highly sheared environments, such as the flanking line of a supercell, they can even produce mesocyclonic-type tornadoes. Additionally, special circumstances like volcanic eruptions or large-scale wildfires can create pyrocumulus congestus clouds. 
In certain areas, these clouds can exhibit unique, short-lived behaviors. Some people use the slang term "turkey tower" to describe a specific phenomenon. A turkey tower is a narrow, tall, individual towering cloud that develops from a small cumulus. These towers often appear and then suddenly fall apart. The sudden development of these towers can signify that a capping inversion is breaking or weakening. Areas where these towers form consistently are known as "agitated areas." This term is often applied to the general behavior of congestus clouds in such environments.
