Constantine XI was the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire. 
He was born in 1404. His father was Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos. Constantine was a skilled soldier. He was also a good leader. He helped rule when his brother was away. 
Constantine ruled a part of Greece called the Morea. He worked to make his lands stronger. He helped rebuild a big wall to stop attacks. He also fought to win back more land.
In 1449, Constantine became the emperor in Constantinople. The city was very important. But the Ottoman Empire was growing fast. They surrounded the city. In 1453, the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II attacked.
The sultan had a very large army. Constantine had very few men to defend the city. He chose to stay and fight. He died in the battle. Because of his bravery, people tell stories about him. Some legends say an angel saved him. They call him "The Marble Emperor."
Constantine XI Palaiologos was the very last emperor of the Byzantine Empire.

Constantine was born on February 8, 1404. He was the fourth son of Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos and the Serbian noblewoman Helena Dragaš.
Before becoming emperor, Constantine proved himself as both a soldier and an administrator. 
Constantine also played a major role in governing the Morea, which is the Peloponnese peninsula. 
When Constantine XI became emperor on January 6, 1449, he faced three massive challenges. The first was the lack of an heir. Constantine was childless, and despite efforts by his confidant George Sphrantzes, he never married. The second challenge was a deep religious conflict. Constantine and John VIII supported a union between the Greek Orthodox and Catholic Churches. They hoped this union would bring military aid from Catholic Europe. However, much of the Byzantine people, led by Mark of Ephesus, strongly opposed this union.
The third and most critical challenge was the rise of the Ottoman Empire. By 1449, the Ottoman Turks had completely surrounded Constantinople. In April 1453, the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II began a massive siege of the city. 
On May 29, 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman forces. Constantine XI died in battle during the final struggle.
