A conglomerate is a special kind of sedimentary rock. It is made of many rounded pieces of rock. Scientists call these large pieces clasts. These clasts are held together by a finer material called a matrix. The matrix might be made of sand, silt, or clay.

This rock is quite rare in nature. It likely makes up less than 1 percent of all sedimentary rocks. Even though it is rare, it tells us much about the past. It is closely related to sandstone in how it forms.

These rocks form through a slow and steady way of working. First, water or glaciers move rounded gravel to a new place. This gravel is then deposited in layers. Over a very long time, heavy pressure squeezes the pieces together. To hold everything in place, a natural glue is needed. This glue is often calcium carbonate, iron oxide, or silica. Sometimes, even hardened clay acts as the cement.

Geologists use many rules to name these rocks. They look at how round the clasts are. If the pieces are round, it is a conglomerate. If the pieces are sharp and angular, it is called a breccia. Some rocks have a mix of both shapes. These are called breccio-conglomerates. They also look at how the clasts touch each other. If the clasts float in the matrix, it is a paraconglomerate. If the clasts touch, it is an orthoconglomerate.

There are many different types based on what is inside. A rock with only one kind of mineral is monomictic. A rock with many different types of minerals is polymictic. Scientists even name them by the size of the pieces. A rock with large pebbles is a pebble conglomerate. A rock with big boulders is a cobble conglomerate. In desert areas, large piles of these rocks are called fanglomerates.

We can find these rocks in many amazing places. In Scotland, they form rugged cliffs near Stonehaven. In Australia, they make up the hills of Kata Tjuta. We can even find them on other planets. The Curiosity rover found gravel on Mars at a place called Hottah. These pebbles were likely moved by an ancient stream. This stream was only ankle to hip-deep.

As the energy of the water or ice decreases, the gravel is deposited. Over long periods, heavy pressure from overlying layers begins to solidify these deposits. To hold the structure together, natural minerals act as a cement. This cementation is often performed by calcium carbonate, silica, or iron oxide. Sometimes, even hardened clay serves as the binding agent that turns the loose gravel into solid rock.

Geologists classify conglomerates using several distinct methods. One primary method is based on the shape of the clasts. If the fragments are well-rounded or subrounded, the rock is a conglomerate. If the fragments are sharp and angular, the rock is called a breccia. Some rocks contain a mixture of both shapes and are called breccio-conglomerates.

Another classification depends on how the clasts relate to the matrix. In a paraconglomerate, the clasts do not touch and instead float within the matrix. In an orthoconglomerate, the clasts are in direct contact with one another. These differences often reflect whether the rock was deposited by water or by debris flows.

Scientists also categorize conglomerates by the variety of minerals they contain. A rock made of only one type of mineral or rock is called a monomictic conglomerate. If the rock contains two or more different types of minerals or rocks, it is called a polymictic conglomerate.

If a polymictic conglomerate contains many unstable or metastable minerals, it is specifically called a petromictic conglomerate. Additionally, geologists look at the source of the material. Extraformational conglomerates contain clasts that were brought in from outside the deposition basin. Conversely, intraformational conglomerates consist of materials derived from within the basin itself.

Specific types of intraformational conglomerates provide clues about ancient environments. A shale-pebble conglomerate is made of rounded mud chips and pebbles held together by clay. These are often created by erosion in river channels or lake margins. Another type is the flat-pebble conglomerate, which consists of flat lime mud clasts. These are often formed by storms or tsunamis eroding a shallow sea floor.

Conglomerates can also be named by the size of their dominant clasts. This includes granule conglomerates, pebble conglomerates, and cobble conglomerates.

Conglomerates appear in many different sedimentary environments across the Earth. In deepwater marine settings, they often form the base of turbidite beds. In shallow marine areas, they appear as basal conglomerates at the start of marine transgressions. Fluvial environments, such as rivers, often produce well-rounded but poorly sorted conglomerates.

In high-relief areas like mountains, alluvial fans can create very thick deposits. When these accumulate in rapidly eroding desert environments, they are called fanglomerates. Glaciers also create conglomerates, such as tillites, which are typically matrix-supported and poorly sorted.

There are many notable examples of conglomerate formations around the world. In Montserrat, the rock is strong enough to be used as a building material for the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. The Crestone Conglomerate in Colorado features poorly sorted fanglomerates with red and green hues. In Scotland, conglomerate cliffs form rugged promontories like Dunnottar Castle.

Even on Mars, scientists have found evidence of this rock. The Curiosity rover discovered conglomerate slabs at an outcrop named Hottah. These pebbles were likely deposited by an ancient stream that was only ankle- to hip-deep. This discovery helps scientists understand the watery history of the Red Planet.
