Soon after, they learned about another specimen found by a farmer named Yang Yushan. In 1995, these researchers formally named the bird Confuciusornis sanctus. They named it after the famous Chinese philosopher Confucius. The name "sanctus" means "holy one" in Latin.

Many fossils of this bird have been found in China. Most come from the Yixian and Jiufotang Formations.

Scientists think entire flocks were killed by volcanic eruptions. Ash, heat, or poisonous gas may have covered the birds. This happened near a lake, and the birds were buried in lake sediments. This helped preserve their bones very well. One museum in Shandong holds 536 specimens of this bird.

Confuciusornis is a genus of basal avialan theropod dinosaur. It lived during the Early Cretaceous Period, roughly 125 to 120 million years ago. These creatures lived in what is now China, specifically within the Yixian and Jiufotang Formations. This genus is vital to our understanding of bird evolution. It represents a transitional stage in the history of flight and anatomy. Scientists study these fossils to see how dinosaurs slowly became the birds we see today.

One of the most striking features of Confuciusornis is its toothless beak. While many later relatives like Ichthyornis still had teeth, Confuciusornis had a robust, pointed beak. This loss of teeth happened convergently, meaning it evolved separately from modern birds.

The skull was somewhat triangular when viewed from the side. The front of the jaws featured a keratinous rhamphotheca, which is a horn-covered beak. The premaxillae, or the front bones of the upper jaw, were fused together for much of the snout. However, they remained separated at the tip by a small, V-shaped notch.

Confuciusornis possessed a unique mix of primitive and advanced biological traits. It was more derived than the famous Archaeopteryx because it had a pygostyle. A pygostyle is a short tail formed by several small, fused vertebrae. It also had a bony sternum, which is a breastbone used for muscle attachment. Despite these advances, it remained more basal than modern birds. It kept large claws on its forelimbs and had a closed eye-socket. These features link it directly to its dinosaur ancestors.

The history of its discovery is quite remarkable. In November 1993, paleontologists Hou Lianhai and Hu Yoaming visited a collector named Zhang He. Zhang had actually purchased a fossil bird specimen at a local flea market!

Confuciusornis was roughly the size of a modern crow. Its wingspan could reach up to 50 centimeters.

Its body weight varied, with estimates ranging from 100 to 250 grams. While several other species were named, such as C. dui and C. feducciai, many are considered synonyms. This means scientists believe they are actually just different versions of C. sanctus. For example, C. dui was thought to be smaller, but statistical analysis suggests it was just an individual variation.

Today, these fossils are held in many different collections. The National Geological Museum of China holds nearly 100 specimens. The Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature has been reported to possess 536 specimens.
