Climbing is a sport where people scale tall walls. Most contests happen on indoor walls. There are three main ways to climb.

Lead climbing tests how high you can go. Climbers use a rope for safety. They must clip the rope into metal loops called quickdraws. They get one try to reach the highest hold.

Bouldering is about solving puzzles. Climbers tackle short walls without ropes. They land on soft pads for safety.

They earn points by reaching "top" holds or mid-way "zone" holds.

Speed climbing is a fast race. Two climbers race side by side. They use a wall where every hold is in the same spot. They use a machine to catch them with a rope.

{ "text": "Competition climbing is a thrilling sport where athletes scale tall, artificial walls. People love it because it tests strength, speed, and smart thinking. There are three main ways to compete: lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing. Sometimes, these are grouped into a \"combined\" format to find an all-around winner. This sport is very exciting to watch and perform. It brings people together through skill and grit.\n\nEach style works in a different way. In lead climbing, you have six minutes to reach the highest hold. You must clip your rope into metal loops called quickdraws to stay safe. Bouldering is about solving short, tricky puzzles without any ropes. You use soft crash pads on the ground for safety. You earn points by reaching \"top\" holds or middle \"zone\" holds.

Climbers race in pairs to see who is fastest.\n\nThis sport has a long and interesting history. It began when \"sport climbing" arrived in the mid-1980s. In this style, safety bolts are already in the rock. Some climbers did not like this idea at first. However, the first big event was held at Sportroccia in 1985. Winners there included Stefan Glowacz, Patrick Edlinger, and Catherine Destivelle. Later, the UIAA began to regulate the sport. They moved competitions onto indoor artificial walls to make them official.\n\nMany big events happen around the world today. World Climbing, formerly known as the IFSC, organizes these contests. They run the biennial World Climbing Championship every two years. They also host the annual World Climbing Series.

In the 2020 Olympics, Alberto Ginés López and Janja Garnbret won the first gold medals. The 2024 Olympics split the events into two groups. Speed climbing became its own event, while lead and bouldering stayed together. This shows how the sport is always changing.\n\nClimbing connects to many things you might already know. It is a part of the Olympic Games, which is the biggest sports stage.

These indoor walls are purpose-built for specific challenges. The sport tests physical strength, mental strategy, and rapid reflexes. It is divided into three distinct disciplines: lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing. Sometimes, these disciplines are merged into a "combined" format. This format identifies an all-around winner who excels in multiple styles. Today, the sport is governed by World Climbing, formerly the IFSC.

Lead climbing focuses on endurance and technical skill. A climber has six minutes to ascend a challenging, overhanging route. This route is constructed by a professional route setter. The climber must use a safety rope and clip it into pre-placed metal loops called quickdraws. If a climber fails to clip into a quickdraw, their climb ends immediately. Scores are based on the highest numbered artificial hold controlled. If they reach for the next hold before falling, they earn a "+" bonus. Competitors must also inspect the route without practicing it first. This makes the climb an "onsight," which is a very difficult way to ascend.

Bouldering is a different challenge that emphasizes problem-solving. Instead of long routes, climbers tackle short "problems" without using any ropes. Safety is provided by thick crash pads placed on the ground.

Each problem has a specific start position for all four limbs. To complete a problem, a climber must hold the marked "top" hold. They can also earn half points by reaching "zone holds" at the midpoint. Scores are calculated by the number of tops and zones achieved. As of 2026, a top is worth 25 points and a zone is worth 10. However, 0.1 points are deducted for every unsuccessful attempt made.

Speed climbing is a direct race against time and opponents. It takes place on a standardized climbing wall. This means the holds are always the same size and in the same spots. Unlike other styles, climbers do not clip into quickdraws during the ascent. Instead, they use an auto-belay top rope for protection.

In qualification rounds, climbers race in pairs in Lane A and Lane B. They are racing against the clock rather than each other. In the final rounds, the climbers face off in elimination matches. The winner of these rounds advances until a final champion is crowned.

The history of the sport traces back to the mid-1980s. This was when "sport climbing" first arrived. In sport climbing, safety bolts are pre-installed into the rock. Some early climbers actually rejected this idea due to ethical concerns. However, the first major international event was Sportroccia in 1985. Famous early winners included Stefan Glowacz, Patrick Edlinger, and Catherine Destivelle. By 1988, the UIAA began to regulate the sport officially. They moved competitions from natural rocks to indoor artificial walls. This change helped the sport grow through organized World Cups and Championships.

Competition climbing has reached the highest levels of global sport. It made its Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In Tokyo, Alberto Ginés López and Janja Garnbret won the first gold medals. The 2020 format combined all three disciplines into one medal event. This caused some debate within the climbing community. By the 2024 Paris Olympics, the format changed again. Speed climbing became a standalone event, while lead and bouldering remained combined. The International Olympic Committee has now designated climbing as a core Olympic sport starting in 2028.

Major international organizations keep the sport organized and professional. World Climbing manages the biennial World Climbing Championship. They also run the annual World Climbing Series. This series consists of several events held at different locations worldwide. The series tracks aggregate scores to find overall winners in each discipline. These competitions allow the best climbers, like Jakob Schubert and Adam Ondra, to showcase their skills. Through these structured events, climbing has evolved from a niche activity into a global phenomenon.
