It was incredibly bright and easy to see. Because of this, many people called it the Great Comet of 1997. This comet was special because it stayed visible to the naked eye for a very long time. It was seen for 569 days, which is about 18 months. This set a new record for how long a comet can be seen without a telescope. The previous record was held by the Great Comet of 1811, which lasted 9 months.

A comet is a large object made of ice and dust. Hale–Bopp had a huge nucleus, which is the solid center of the comet. This nucleus was about six times the size of the famous Halley's Comet. As the comet gets closer to the Sun, it begins to show activity. It develops a coma, which is a fuzzy cloud around the center. This comet even grew two different tails. One was a blue gas tail that pointed away from the Sun. The other was a yellowish dust tail that curved along its path.

Two different people discovered the comet on July 23, 1995. Alan Hale was looking at the sky from his driveway in New Mexico. Thomas Bopp was near Phoenix, Arizona, using a homemade telescope. Both men saw the comet near a star group called M70 in the constellation Sagittarius. Hale sent his discovery by email to a special group for astronomers. Bopp sent his discovery using a Western Union telegram. The discovery was officially announced in a circular from the International Astronomical Union.

Scientists learned many new things by watching Hale–Bopp closely. They found that the comet's dust grains were smaller than those in other comets. They also discovered a third, faint tail made of sodium. This sodium tail was only visible using special tools. Scientists found that the comet contained heavy water. This water had twice as much deuterium as the water in Earth's oceans. This discovery helps scientists understand if comets brought water to our planet long ago.

Jupiter's gravity was strong enough to change the comet's path. This change made its orbit shorter, lasting about 2,399 years. Now, the comet is far away from the Sun. It was a long-period comet that became one of the brightest objects in the sky for many decades. Because of its incredible brightness and long visibility, it earned the nickname "The Great Comet of 1997."

The comet was discovered independently on July 23, 1995, by two different observers in the United States. Alan Hale was observing from his driveway in New Mexico when he found the comet near the globular cluster M70 in the constellation Sagittarius. He noticed the object was moving relative to the background stars and emailed the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams. At the same time, Thomas Bopp discovered the comet while using a 17.5-inch Dobsonian telescope at Vekol Ranch near Phoenix, Arizona. Bopp sent his notification via a Western Union telegram. The following morning, the International Astronomical Union officially confirmed the discovery.

Even before it was visible to the naked eye, Hale–Bopp showed surprising activity. In 1995, it was located 7.2 astronomical units (au) from the Sun, a distance between Jupiter and Saturn. Most comets at such a distance are too faint to show any activity, but Hale–Bopp already had an observable coma, which is a fuzzy cloud of gas and dust. A precovery image from 1993 showed the comet even further away at 13 au. Scientists determined that its nucleus was approximately six times larger in diameter than Halley's Comet. This massive size suggested the comet would become exceptionally bright as it approached perihelion, the point in its orbit closest to the Sun.

As the comet approached the Sun in early 1997, it became a spectacular sight. It became visible to the naked eye in May 1996, and by January 1997, it could be seen even from large, light-polluted cities. The comet reached perihelion on April 1, 1997, reaching a magnitude of about −1.8. At this peak, it was brighter than any star in the night sky except for Sirius. The comet displayed two distinct tails: a blue gas tail pointing away from the Sun and a yellowish dust tail curving along its orbital path.

On March 9, 1997, a solar eclipse in China, Mongolia, and eastern Siberia even allowed people to see the comet during the daytime.

Observations of Hale–Bopp provided scientists with groundbreaking data about cometary composition. Astronomers discovered that the comet's dust grains were smaller than those found in any other observed comet. They also identified a third, rare type of tail: a faint sodium tail made of neutral atoms. This tail was only visible using powerful instruments with dedicated filters and extended for millions of kilometers.

Additionally, researchers found that the comet contained heavy water with a deuterium abundance about twice that of Earth's oceans. This finding helps scientists study whether cometary impacts were a primary source of water on Earth.

The history of the comet's orbit reaches back thousands of years. It likely made a previous perihelion passage around 2215 BC, near the time of the Egyptian Pharaoh Pepi II. During that era, a near collision with Jupiter may have dramatically altered its orbit. In April 1996, the comet passed near Jupiter again, and the planet's gravity shortened its orbital period to roughly 2,399 years.

Its next return to the inner Solar System is predicted to occur around the year 4385. While the chance of a future impact with Earth is very low, the massive size of the nucleus means such an event would be catastrophic.

Even as it recedes from the Sun, Hale–Bopp remains a subject of scientific study. In 2007, it was still detected as an active comet at a distance of 25.7 au. The Herschel Space Observatory captured images in 2010 suggesting the nucleus was covered in a fresh layer of frost. More recently, the James Webb Space Telescope observed the comet in 2022 when it was 46.2 au from the Sun.
