Some stories say she made the sacrifice after he returned home around 245 BC. An astronomer named Conon of Samos helped share this story. He suggested the goddess Aphrodite placed her hair in the sky to honor the Queen. This beautiful idea turned a historical event into a pattern of stars.

Many people have studied these stars for a very long time. Conon of Samos first introduced it to Western astronomy in the third century BC. Later, famous map-makers like Gerardus Mercator and Tycho Brahe helped confirm it as a constellation. Mercator included it on his celestial globes in 1551. Tycho Brahe even listed fourteen stars in it in his 1602 star catalogue. Over the years, more people found more stars. Johannes Hevelius found twenty-one stars, and John Flamsteed found forty-three stars.

It is about 15% more massive and 10% larger than the Sun. The second brightest star is Alpha Comae Berenices, also called Diadem. It is a double star system located 58.1 light-years away. It connects to many different astronomical studies, from meteor showers to galaxy clusters. The Coma Berenicids meteor shower even has its radiant in this area. This shower is known for having very fast meteor speeds. This makes the constellation a central part of the cosmic map.
