Look up at the northern sky. You might see a group of stars called Coma Berenices. 
Long ago, the Queen made a promise. She said she would give her hair to the gods. She did this to help her husband return safely from war. 
The stars in this group are not very bright. The brightest star is Beta Comae Berenices. It is a star like our Sun. 
This area of space is very busy. It holds the Coma Cluster. This is a large group of many galaxies. It also holds a giant galaxy called Malin 1. This galaxy is very hard to see because it is so faint. 
Look up at the northern sky to find Coma Berenices. 
The story of its name begins with Queen Berenice II of Egypt. 
Many people have studied these stars for a very long time. Conon of Samos first introduced it to Western astronomy in the third century BC. Later, famous map-makers like Gerardus Mercator and Tycho Brahe helped confirm it as a constellation. Mercator included it on his celestial globes in 1551. Tycho Brahe even listed fourteen stars in it in his 1602 star catalogue. Over the years, more people found more stars. Johannes Hevelius found twenty-one stars, and John Flamsteed found forty-three stars. 
The stars in this constellation are not the brightest in the sky. None of them are brighter than a magnitude of 4.2. 
Even though the stars are faint, this area of space is very busy. 
Coma Berenices is an ancient asterism in the northern sky. It is officially defined as one of the 88 modern constellations. This group of stars sits in the fourth galactic quadrant. It is located between the constellations Leo and Boötes. You can see it from both the northern and southern hemispheres. 
The name honors Queen Berenice II of Egypt. During the Third Syrian War, she made a sacred vow. She promised to sacrifice her long hair as a votive offering. She did this to ensure her husband, Ptolemy III Euergetes, returned safely from battle. 
Astronomers have studied these stars for many centuries. Conon of Samos introduced the pattern to Western astronomy in the third century BC. Later, the constellation was recognized by Hipparchus and Geminus. It was not included in Ptolemy's famous Almagest, as he viewed it as part of Leo. During the 16th century, the constellation became very popular again. In 1551, Gerardus Mercator included it on a celestial globe. 
The constellation is not exceptionally bright to the naked eye. None of its stars exceed a magnitude of 4.2. 
Deep space objects make this constellation a vital area for study. It contains the North Galactic Pole. It also houses the Coma Cluster, which is a massive group of galaxies. This cluster is part of the larger Coma Supercluster. 
Many different types of stars exist within these boundaries. There are over 200 known variable stars in this constellation. These are stars that change in brightness over time. One important example is FK Comae Berenices. This star is the prototype for its own class of variable stars. It was also where scientists discovered the "flip-flop phenomenon." The constellation also contains many eclipsing binaries and triple star systems. For example, 12 Comae Berenices is a triple star system. These diverse star types help astronomers understand how stars live and die.
Coma Berenices covers 386.5 square degrees of the sky. This accounts for 0.937% of the total night sky. It is ranked 42nd in size among all constellations. Its boundaries were officially set by Eugène Delporte in 1930. The constellation is visible to anyone north of 56°S latitude. It connects to many different astronomical studies, from meteor showers to galaxy clusters. The Coma Berenicids meteor shower even has its radiant in this area. This shower is known for having very fast meteor speeds. This makes the constellation a central part of the cosmic map.
